The 1993 Jaguar Machine season ended before they could fufill their lofty expectations. The 1993 season also marked the suprising end to head coach Jack Garrity's successful but too brief run at TJ. Garrity returned a winning tradition to TJ that focused on the players having fun, and embedding the team first attitude that became a staple of the football program.
The team was picked pre-season by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as the #3 team in the WPIAL and #10 in the PIAA with the return of key starters like Pre-Season Pittsburgh Post Gazette Fabulous 22 selection Brandon Adams, wide receiver Tom Alexander, and linebackers/ running backs Aaron Brettshneider and Leo Giel. The Jaguar Machine would see a rash of injuries to key players, but others stepped in and contributed tremendously.
Offensively the team relied more heavily upon the passing game than at anytime in Thomas Jefferson's history, and averaged 22.9 points per game. They were led by the passing of Brandon Adams who finished with over 1,500 yards passing, a new school record, and finished #5 in the WPIAL in passing. His receivers were led by Tom Alexander, who broke every receiving record in school history, Aaron Brettshneider, Chuck Barkey, Mike Yablonsky, Frank Magaro, Brett Adams, and Dan Tulusiak.
Defensively, the team yielded 11.9 points per game and were led by linebackers Leo Giel and Jeremy Maxa. Giel turned in one the great defensive efforts in school history versus a tough #3 ranked Peters Township team when the team absolutely need a win.
The Big 8 Conference was as tough in 1993 as Jack Garrity and the coaching staff have seen in their previous three years. Four teams finished 7-3 or better, and another two finished at .500, while McGuffey won the WPIAL title.
The team demeanor was a close knit group that were as serious as they were pranksters. It was not uncommon for unsuspecting team members to get hit in the face with a pie, or receive an unwanted haircut (or wanted; it depends on who you asked). Through it all, the group remained close, never gave up on each other, and the seniors would leave the program compiling a terrific 27-6 record overall.
