We started keeping chickens in 2008, its great fun and profitable too in many ways, eggs to eat, eggs to sell, birds to sell and of corse birds to eat. As time progressed we started thinking more seriously about what to do 'chicken wise' and came up with a plan. We decided on dual purpose birds to keep and breed aiming to recreate the original style of heavy placid bird, with good laying abilities of a good dark brown egg.
The Barnevelder is a dutch bird, nicely chilled and of course dual purpose, easy to keep and pretty friendly.
Our second breed is the Light Sussex, of course from Sussex. Again a pretty bird, hardy and easy to look after. a good back garden bird. Slightly less people friendly that the Barnevelder, but none the less a welcome addition to any flock. Tinted eggs from these.
