1977 Lionettes
1977 will provide Lionette fans with a treat seldom seen in women’s softball on the West Coast. In spite of their excellent record fashioned in 1976 on their way to the WPS playoffs, the Lionettes; owner, Ed Goldstein, was determined to provide Orange County fans with a team that would be both exciting and colorful.
He obtained Charlotte Graham, the top pitcher and team leader of last year’s Western Division Champion San Jose Sunbirds. Donna Lopiano, ten time amateur national All-Star and one of the top pitchers in the country, was obtained in the dispersal draft.
In all, the Lionettes have only six players from last year’s roster returning this season. Mickey Davis, long-time Lionette favorite, heads the list of the returning players. Mickey, perhaps more than any other player, typifies the new Lionette spirit. Her flashing speed and quick smile have made Mickey one of the fan’s favorites.
Speed, aggressiveness and a strong offense have been added to the stubborn defense the Lionette fans have come to expect from past Lionette teams.
Fan participation is perhaps the most important ingredient added to the Lionette this season. The Lionettes will invite fans on the field for a variety of “nights” and players will be available for autographs and interviews before and after every game.
