A series of sketches introducing members of the Lionettes appeared in the Orange County Register. This is the first of the series:
MICKEY DAVIS - Mickey Davis played outfield for the Orange Lionettes for eight years following a successful tenure with the Orlando Rebels and Atlanta Tomboys. This will mark her ninth year with the club..only this season she’ll be playing as a professional.
Mickey has some interesting thoughts regarding the upcoming season and the advent of professional sports (specifically softball) for women.
“The pro league was a long time in coming but I feel it will succeed because the caliber of softball is tops,” she says. “It has been organized well, and the teams involved are really dedicated to getting it off the ground.”
Mickey says she would like to play softball as long as she can and then would be interested in managing some team. When asked about the Lionettes going pro she replied, “the Lionettes are a natural to enter such a league. The management and players on our team have always given 110 percent and mediocrity is just not a word in the Lionettes’ vocabulary. The Lionettes are used to being on top, and judging from their performance and success as amateurs and, with the additional players who are being added, I can’t believe they won’t continue to be one of the dominating teams in the game.”
Mickey earned five National All-Star honors while performing on the amateur level. She is expected to be in left field again when the Lionettes begin their season May 29 in the Santa Ana Bowl against Los Angeles.
Mickey teaches physical education at Cerritos High School and just recently completed her masters’ degree in education at Whittier College. She hopes eventually to go into counseling or some form of school administration.
Other sports rate high with Mickey. She has played tennis and basketball competitively and has a growing interest in golf. Her favorite pastime is spending time at the beach in the sun. Being near the beach is the thing she misses the most since buying a condominium in Tustin.
