* Conversion of 2d to 3d

What if you only have a 2d image, not stereo pairs? How do you convert such to 3d and why would you want to do so?

Paintings of the famous and by the famous are often enhanced in terms of understanding and meaning if converted to 3d images by using software that permits you to determine what is in the foreground and what is in the background.
