Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is used to get blog entries news headlines in a standardized format. An RSS document is called a "feed" and contains headlines, full or summarized text and even other supporting data like pictures. [1][2]
[2]
Here is an example. This is the main news RSS feed from the site www.mybroadband.co.za. Because RSS is a standard it makes it easy for other sites (like IEB-IT Wiki) to display news from another site without having to manually add the news.
Users can also subscribe (follow) to feeds. Programs like Google Reader can be used to view collated news from multiple feeds.
