As IT teachers we should be leading the way in using IT in the classroom and to generate good quality materials for students.
A wiki can be used from PCs, Macs, Tablets, even phones. Using a wiki it is possible to add videos, sounds and interactive materials directly within pages.
It is free for students and teachers to use. If teacher would like to use it then they must contribute by helping to maintain, edit and improve content on the wiki.
First of all, I hope that it will be our wiki and not just my wiki. Secondly, Google is great - all the correct answers are there (along with plenty of incorrect answers). But they are not all gathered in one place or written using language appropriate for the level of our learners. Yes, we should expect our learners to be able to find information for themselves - but we seem to be the only subject with no real limit to our theory syllabus.
If you don't like the answer in the wiki - then change the answer. That's the idea of a wiki. If there is disagreement - we should be able to pick it up fairly quickly using a wiki rather than us all creating our own notes. As it stands, the wiki is new, and will have many mistakes and missing information. Don't expect this wiki to be anywhere near a finished product yet. Anybody can subscribe to changes on the wiki - so if somebody changes a definition or explanation we will know about it.
Exactly - the kids are expected to find information from multiple sources. At conference last year, the examiner said she would be asking things from the textbook - but there is no official textbook. So I wanted to create a single place where kids (and teachers) can get all the theory information they need - Terminology, Definitions, explanations, exercises, collated data from both text books.
Yes this is unfortunately human nature. Some teachers will just sponge off our work, it's true. But they are probably bad teachers who will continue to get poor results anyway. My motive for creating this website is selfish - I want my kids to have access to the best notes and materials. You might have a far better understanding than me in many areas and my kids will benefit from your knowledge - and vice versa. I'm also tired of paying for textbooks with only half the information in them.
Because you haven't made it perfect yet. Do some research and contribute. However, make sure that it is inline with the syllabus. Some definitions straddle more than one section - if you believe that something is in the wrong place - think about for a while, maybe discuss it with others, then move the information to the correct section.
