Alexander R. Murphy

Alexander Murphy is a graduate student at the Georgia Institute of Technology and is pursuing a PhD in mechanical engineering. He was born and raised in Tampa Florida, where he received a B.S. in mechanical engineering with a minor in creative writing from the University of South Florida. With his time at USF, he completed an undergraduate honors thesis titled "The Future of Marimba Design: Protecting Honduran Rosewood through the Prospect of New Materials Research" and did research on innovative 3D-Printing technology.

He considers himself a percussionist and competed at the national level for three consecutive years with an ensemble based out of Orlando Florida called Infinity Percussion. In July of 2017, he had his first literary publication—a video essay titled "Beneath the City"— in the Florida Review Online. Currently, he is interested in exploring correlations between level of reading comprehension, writing skill, and design ability. After completing his graduate degree, Alexander wants to become academic faculty or work in the design field as a consultant.
