1 Researching
Whenever I set about any task, I have a strong desire to ensure that all avenues are explored. This usually begins with a series of basic thought experiments to explore my known solution paths. This process will involve much background reading and possibly experimentation. I then present the likely scenarios for discussions and brainstorming with associates. I then review the list of achievable outcomes. Only then will I embark on planning the pursuit of at least one of the viable lines of enquiry within the time/resource available.
2 Planning
During my career, I have always planned projects to finer details. In order to provide a good plan, I always analyse the architecture involved and communicate with all stakeholders to ensure the plan is agreed.
3 Negotiation
In both personal and professional matters, I endeavour to move forward on the basis of trust. This has helped in my negotiations with others as the approach tends to lead to early disclosure of needs that I may be able to respond to.
4 Written communication
Report writing has featured throughout my working life. The ability to present proposals, results and conclusions in a clear and focused manner has been paramount. I have also recognised that content and style should be tailored to suit both the purpose of the text and intended readership. I have always enjoyed making the effort to choose the correct phrasing. This has helped in my general communications more recently as email becomes a more widespread medium.
5 Abstract reasoning
Even when embroiled within the “here and now” of a problem, I retain the ability to “step outside” and regard the problem in more general terms. This normally benefits team function as other members are then given opportunity to look at the problem with me from a different angle.
6 Motivating
When I have some view of the “bigger picture”, I am well able to motivate. This was evidenced in my management of the ACE project. The project was cancelled, but I had the task to ensure that the team completed the work package in the event that the project was re-instated. I was aware that the European Commission were unhappy that the project had been cancelled. I shared my view of the bigger picture that the European Commission were still in discussions with EUROCONTROL as to the future of the project. I also emphasised that the technological solution was ground-breaking, so the experiences gained would outweigh the prospect of the project never being completed. Within 6 months, the project was back on track and selected as the platform to be used for all simulation activities in the foreseeable future. I was able to motivate all teams to provide solutions where necessary.
7 Using IT
I am rapid to adopt/develop new tools and techniques in order to improve the workflow. I am versed in the use of many commonplace and specialist packages.
8 Numeracy
I am well placed to understand and manipulate mathematical data sets. I can readily solve problems when presented (or translated into) numerical/graphical format.
9 Teamworking
I enjoy contributing positively in a team environment. I enjoy involvement with others towards a shared goal.
10 Empathising
I find myself readily stepping into the other’s shoes in an attempt to better understand how we can help each other.
