For Group Coordinators
2023 ICC GUIDELINES FOR GROUP COORDINATORS
BEFORE THE CLEANUP:
Register at the website. You will receive an email acknowledging your participation. You may also signify your interest to join by email: iccphilippines@gmail.com.
Check website for available cleanup sites or contact a local ICC coordinator, such as, City/Municipal Govt., DENR/CENRO/PENRO, NGOs, socio-civic organizations, resort owners, etc.
For Metro Manila, you are required to submit a list of volunteers to iccphilippines@gmail.com two weeks before the event for area assignment. A copy of the list will be submitted to the registration area on cleanup day.
Know the basic information about ICC and its mechanics through the website.
Conduct a volunteers’ orientation meeting with the aid of slideshows available for downloading at the website. Emphasize to your volunteers the importance of trash data recording and proper estimations (i.e., 1 sack of debris ≥ 15 pounds or 7 kilograms (15 x .45) and 1000 meters=1 kilometer); hazards and safety during cleanup and how to properly fill-in the data form .
Ask members to prepare the following for ICC Day:
Facemasks, rubber gloves, sacks or net bags, Volunteer Ocean Trash Data Form, ballpens or pencils, hat/cap, alcohol or hand sanitizer, food and water. If available, grabbers or tongs, long stick with hook, wire scoop nets (good when tide is high),
Remind volunteers on proper attire:
Preferably with facemasks and gloves on, long pants and long sleeves shirt or t-shirt with your school/organization logo or color; rubber shoes or any closed shoes; hat or cap
You will be notified on the schedule of the ICC Group Coordinators General Meeting to be given by the Site Coordinator.
Advisories on cancellations and reset date of ICC due to bad weather condition will be emailed and posted at our websites and Facebook page. Rescheduling of local cleanups will be upon the discretion of the local ICC Site Coordinators.
Know and remind volunteers on the basic health and safety protocols during the cleanup.
ICC DAY:
Be at the cleanup site by 6:00 AM and proceed to your assigned station to register. For Group Coordinators, register as a group and submit a copy of your list of volunteers. Ocean Trash Data forms and sacks will be available at some stations.
Observe order during the kick-off ceremony.
Before proceeding to the cleanup area, make sure volunteers are wearing facemasks and gloves. Remind them on SAFETY - to watch out for sharp and pointed objects and slippery surfaces. Divide volunteers into groups with 4-5 members and remind to collect only the debris they can carry, not to collect natural items, such as, coconut husk, driftwood, seaweed, & water lilies and to report to you any dead or entangled wildlife.
Oversee collecting, sorting and hauling of trash bags/sacks. Tightly observe children during the cleanup.
Do the segregation and recording in an area where it is shady, safe and far from the water or waves. One member of each group will be in charge of data recording. Remind them to use tick marks and numbers, not words such as, many, sacks or kilos for the total tally count. Instruct team to concentrate data recording in 1 bag/sack only and to return trash back into the sack. Determine its weight using a scale or estimations (i.e., 1 sack of trash=7 kg). Be sure filled sacks are brought to the hauling area.
Check if accomplished data forms are properly filled-out - no missing information, such as, site name, name of school and coordinator, weight of trash, number of bags, etc. because every detail of data is important. Bundle the accomplished data forms using a big clip, crocodile clip, rubber band or staples and submit to the Receiving Area.
Take as many photos as you can. Share these with family and friends. Submit by email to ICC Philippines high resolution pictures for the Philippine Report.
