I went to Bethlehem Catholic High School, so I was required to perform community service hours for all four years of high school.
And then when I was accepted into the Leadership Program at Marietta College, I was required to perform 50 more service hours in order to achieve the certificate.
Therefore, I have volunteered A LOT. Here is the list:
1. Assisted in softball clinics for a local youth league (2009-2011).
My travel softball team at the time "Venom," held softball clinics at night in the fall at a local high school gym for recreational softball teams.
2. Visited Gracedale Nursing Home (2009)
My travel softball team at the time, "Venom," made cookies, visited a local nursing home, handed out cookies, and sang Christmas songs to people within the nursing home.
3. Toy Drive for St. Luke's Hospital (2010 & 2012)
Then in 2010 (We were still named "Venom") & 2012 (We switched organizations and were now called "Legends"), we hosted a Toy Drive at a local Walmart, collected toys, wrapped them, and drove over to St. Luke's Hospital. We spent the next hour or so handing those random toys to patients as Christmas presents.
(2010) (2012)
4. Allentown Musikfest Volunteer Bus Ticket Sales (2011-2013)
My varsity high school softball team would sit at a table in Allentown, Pennsylvania for four hours per day and sell bus tickets to Musikfest - a week-long festival of food, music, and fireworks in August.
5. Assistant Teacher at St. Mary's Parish CCD (2009-2013)
My mother was a second-grade CCD teacher at our church, St Mary's, in Alpha, New Jersey. After school for all four years of high school, I would be an assistant teacher for her. My job included helping the kids learn their prayers, helping out Marybeth in any way that I could, the director of the CCD program, and passing out handouts to every classroom.
6. The Castle in Marietta, Ohio, becoming a docent (2013)
When I was a freshman in college, I started volunteering at The Castle, on Fourth Street in Marietta, Ohio. It's a haunted, historical castle where docents give tours for visitors. I spent that fall learning how to become a docent, but since The Castle closes in the winter/spring, I left to pursue another organization that I could volunteer for that I could receive more hours from. However, my roommate continues to work for The Castle, so I still hear about it through her.
7. Marietta Main Street, designing a Downtown Marietta Walking Tour (2013-2014) (Check out Service Paper 1 & 2 attached down in the files)
I started volunteering for Marietta Main Street after I left The Castle, which is an organization that works to preserve historical, downtown Marietta, to keep it from becoming too modern, and to keep the town looking appealing to visitors. I specifically worked on developing a Downtown Walking Tour for this organization, but it never came into affect because the director, Jean, moved to Florida before it was finished. However, I develop a potential pamphlet, which I will attach as a file down below. After Jean left and after I became an EXCEL Leader, I stopped working for this organization because the Leadership program provided me with me the most service hours through working with the EXCEL Workshop.
8. Marietta College McDonough EXCEL Leader (2014-2015)
I became an EXCEL Leader during the Spring of 2014 for August of 2014 (as a sophomore), and I was also an EXCEL Leader during the Spring of 2015 for August of 2015 (as a junior). The EXCEL Workshop is a week-long educational summer-camp-like event for the incoming freshman who have been accepted into the Leadership Program at Marietta College. I went through it with my roommate during my freshman year, and I loved the experience so much that I applied to become a leader for the next three years (obviously I was not accepted back during my senior year). However, the leaders would have a training week BEFORE EXCEL week, so we would show up to campus 2 weeks early to prepare. We would have a jam-packed week scheduled for the freshmen with activities, meetings, etc. as a sort of orientation to the Leadership program, but it teaches leadership studies/skills, it prepares those freshman to lead their class once the rest of the freshmen class comes to campus that next week, and it bonds that Cohort. It creates a family for the Leadership students on campus, it breaks students out of their introverted, shy shells, and it develops leadership skills for everyone involved. I grew immensely as a leader thanks to this program - it builds confidence and I made my closest friends through those experiences.
Freshman Year: 2013
Sophomore Year: 2014 (EXCEL Leader)
Junior Year: 2015 (EXCEL Leader)
9. Mid-Ohio Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project (2015)
In my Leadership 240 course in Fall 2015, I worked with Emily Schemrich (my partner) on a community service project. We built it from scratch and then gave a presentation on it at the end of the semester. I will attach the essay and presentation in a file below.
