My name is Melissa Desrochers and I am the owner/educator of Honey Bee Preschool. I grew up in East Providence, RI with my parents, and younger brother and sister. In 2017 I moved to Seekonk, MA with my husband, Luke, and our two sons, Caleb and Joshua.
After graduating from high school, I worked as a preschool teacher with a class of 12 two year olds at Little Tykes Daycare. In 2002 I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and had to undergo a year and half of intense chemotherapy and radiation treatments. During that time I was unable to work. Against all odds, I beat cancer in 2004. At that time my immune system was not strong enough to go back to teaching in a room full of toddlers so I decided to become a professional nanny.
I worked for the same family for the next 7yrs. That family started out as a family of three with a two month old son and two years later grew to a family of five, welcoming a set of twin boys into their lives. During the last three years of working with that family, I started working for a second family in the evenings. The second family consisted of an 8yr old, 6 yr old, and 1 year old twins.
In 2009 I married my husband Luke, and soon we were expecting our first son. At that time, the twins from the family I had been nannying for for the last 7yrs were getting ready to head to kindergarten. My long term goal had always been to open my own family child care home and expecting my first child at the same time that the twins were heading to Kindergarten gave me the push to make my dream a reality.
In 2009 I became a Certified Child Daycare Specialist through US Career Institute and in 2010 I opened Honey Bee Preschool. Since then I have become an EEC Certified Preschool, Toddler, and Infant Teacher. Over the years I have taken many early childhood courses such as Toddlers in Child Care, Child Development and Guidance, Caring for Children in Your Home, Learning Centers, Inclusive Early Childhood Programs, Many Ways to Learn for Toddlers and Preschools, and more. In 2017 my family moved from Rumford, RI to Seekonk, MA and in June of 2017 I became an EEC Licensed Family Child Care Provider in the state of Massachusetts. Opening my family child care program has absolutely been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I truly look forward to continuing this journey for many years to come!
