Extra Credit 4

Due 31 December/ May at 11:59 PM HOL time.

Please send your answers in one email to hol.signlanguage@gmail.com and put "Sign Language - Extra Credit 4 - HOL Name" in the subject line. Also remember to include your HOL name and your House in the body of your email.

Option A - Research (30 points)

Research into the linguistics of sign language partly stemmed out of wanting to prove whether or not sign languages were actual languages. More recently, however, there has been a shift towards whether or not previously established language universals still hold true.

Find out what some of these language universals are and either research how studies of sign language have affected these, or tell me how you think sign languages have done so.

Minimum 300 words. Don't forget to cite your sources.

Option B - Application (30 points)

Part A - 1o points:

Find the signs for the following words in the sign language of your choice and include links for them:

i) WHO

ii) WHAT

iii) WHERE

iv) WHEN

v) WHY

vi) HOW

Come up with a question using one of these signs and include the signs for the other words/glosses. Please also include the English for it. Also state which type of question it is. Points will be awarded for effort, not necessarily correctness.

Part B - 20 points

Draw tree diagrams! Come up with a sentence (preferably not a question as those are more complicated than statements), and draw the corresponding tree diagram for it, both using the English structure and the sign language structure. Upload your tree diagrams onto an image-hosting site and send me the links to them. Then comment on any similarities or differences you notice between the two tree diagrams.
