US President Barack Obama was seen making the shaka sign on his inauguration day.[3]
Shane Victorino, the Hawaiian baseball player who plays center field for the Philadelphia Phillies, customarily makes the Shaka sign as he rounds third base after he hits a home run. During the 2009 season, the team started selling foam "We're Number 1" fingers in the shape of the shaka sign at their home ballpark. The fingers say "Flyin' Hawaiian" on them, which is his nickname due to his speed on the base paths.

What a wonderful day for fishing
in the old Hawaiian way,
where the hukilau nets are swishing
down in old Laie Bay.
Oh we're going to a hukilau,
a huki huki huki huki hukilau.
Everybody loves a hukilau,
where the laulau is the kaukau at the big luau.
We throw our nets out into the sea,
and all the ama-ama come a-swimming to me.
Oh we're going to a hukilau,
a huki huki huki,
huki huki hukilau.

Hukilau on the Laie Bay
A hukilau is an ancient Hawaiian fishing method in which a large net is laid in the ocean with lengthy ropes extending to the beach tied to each end. Long leaves, or lau in Hawaiian, which are bound along the length of the ropes, flutter in the water and help scare the fish into the net as the community pulls (huki in Hawaiian) the ropes, gradually bringing the net to shore.

Here I am waiting
Where is my beloved
I've searched for you
Now that I've found you
Calm the desire of my heart
Sealed forever to you
Sweetheart you are so precious
I pledge my love to you alone
I desire you (desire)
True to you alone (alone)
With you joy will ever be mine
You're mine (you're mine)
Oh, my lei (Oh, lei)
You`re mine, my lei
Fond remembrance of the one who came
My fragrant lei
Drenched in the rain
Listen you, my heart's desire
To the thought within me
Open the heaven within my body
My flower, my fragrant lei
I will string and bind
Like the fragrant jasmine flower
You are my blossom (you, my blossom)
My lei of lehua (lehua)

More Asian than American, Honolulu is a delightful blend of ethnicities, a cacophonous mixture of language, custom and cuisine served with generous helpings of Hawaiian hospitality. Among its many museums and cultural offerings, it has the only royal palace in the USA, and has become a foodie heaven of cheap noodle joints and fancy Pacific Rim cuisine. Then, when city life is all too much, you can saunter over to gorgeous Waikiki to lounge on the sand, play in the water and listen to splendid Hawaiian music in the evening.

Lush, rural Kaua'i is the Pacific Ocean’s magnificent jade temple. On Hawaii’s oldest major island, nature’s fingers have had time to dig deep – carving the unbelievable fluted cliffs of the Na Pali Coast and the tremendous ragged gash of Waimea Canyon. A mecca for hikers and kayakers, Kauaʻi is beloved by outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes, and it has been the darling of honeymooners ever since Elvis tied the knot here in Blue Hawaii. Forget coddling resorts, decadent shopping or bustling nightlife. Come to Kauaʻi for its heavenly art gallery – the one you find outdoors. The price for these works? Just a pair of boots and a little sweat.

Hawai'i, birthplace of Kamehameha – Hawaii’s great ruler – has well-preserved cultural sites, from ancient stone heiau (temples) to sacred places of refuge. Even if you struggle to pronounce their names, the shimmering mana (spiritual essence) of these places will pierce your heart.

Crater rim, caldera, crater drive
Majestic Mauna Loa (13, 677ft) looms like a sleeping giant, while young Kilauea – the world’s most active volcano – has been erupting almost continually since 1983. With luck, you’ll witness the primal event of molten lava tumbling into the sea. But the park contains much more – overwhelming lava deserts, steaming craters, lava tubes, ancient rain forests – and hikers will always wish for more time.Near the park entrance is the Kilauea Visitor Center.
The exhibits here introduce the museum's founder, the famous volcanologist Dr Thomas A Jaggar; overview the Hawaiian pantheon; and provide a deeper understanding of volcanic geology. They also sport a bank of real-time seismographs tracking the park's daily quota of earthquakes. If that doesn't sound interesting, at least stop for the view of Halema'uma'u Crater and, on a clear day, Mauna Loa 20 miles away.
Just before you reach the Dr. Thomas A. Jaggar Museum, the Kilauea Overlook also provides a pause-worthy panorama, and a few miles beyond is the Southwest Rift. This rocky fissure is more massive and long than it looks; it slices from the caldera summit here all the way to the coast and under the ocean floor. the views are guaranteed to bankrupt your camera battery.

Ellison Onizuka's gravesite is in a place of honor in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Punchbowl Crater, near Honolulu, Hawaii. As the hallowed resting place of many American service personnel lost in the Pacific Theater of World War II and in the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts, it is appropriately located in a crater known to the people of Hawaiia as "Puowaina", or "Hill of Placing Human Sacrifices," the site of many royal burials.
Onizuka, Hawaii's first astronaut who died aboard Challenger on January 28, 1986, and who was interred on June 2, 1986, is next to war correspondent Ernie Pyle, who was buried there on July 19, 1949, the cemetery's opening date.
Astronaut Ellison S Onizuka Space Center pays tribute to the Big Island native who perished in the 1986 Challenger space-shuttle disaster. The little museum sits between the departure and arrival buildings and features exhibits and educational films about space and astronauts. Items on display include a moon rock, a NASA space suit and scale models of spacecraft.
The Onizuka Center at Mauna Kea (White Mountain, Hawaii's highest peak) offers displays and stargazing, while a rugged 9.7km (6mi) hiking trail leads from here to the summit.

The insertion of the apostrophe or hamsa to indicate the catch in the voice, by no means lost in Hawaiian speech, where an original voiced glottal or nasal has become soundless, remained unmarked by the missionaries who reduced the language to written form and was indicated, and that unevenly and only when occurring within the word, by Parker's 1922 revision of Andrew's dictionary of 1865. Yet it is of first importance in distinguishing two unrelated words otherwise spelled alike but derived from different roots and carrying different meanings. No Hawaiian today can be an infallible guide for the exact voicing of a chant no longer to be heard in oral recitation. I have, however, depended upon native authority, especially upon Mrs. Mary Pukui, for correction of this omission, with occasional help from Dr. Buck and Dr. Emory, and with generous assistance in verification by Dr. Elbert, philologist in charge, with Mrs. Pukui and Dr. Emory, of a new revision of the Hawaiian dictionary.
