Sir Francis Galton, FRS (/ˈfrɑːnsɪs ˈɡɔːltən/; 16 February 1822 – 17 January 1911), cousin of Douglas Strutt Galton, cousin of Charles Darwin, was an English Victorian polymath: anthropologist, eugenicist, tropical explorer, geographer, inventor, meteorologist, proto-geneticist, psychometrician, and statistician. He was knighted in 1909.

Ever since Francis Galton noticed the preponderance of firstborns in the English scientific community (PDF), experts have weighed in on whether birth order affects intelligence. Theorists have argued that "laterborns" live in less cognitively stimulating environments filled with more kids and are left with fewer resources for the pursuit of knowledge. Since intelligence is fairly heritable, can this seeming birth-order effect be explained instead by the preference of smarter parents to simply have fewer children?
METHODOLOGY: London School of Economics and Political Science researcher Satoshi Kanazawa analyzed data from a British study of more than 17,000 people, who took multiple intelligence tests at ages seven, 11, and 16. He controlled for several variables, including fertility, social class, and parental educational background.
RESULTS: Children from larger families, regardless of their birth orders, tend to be less intelligent than kids in smaller households. Birth order is not associated with intelligence once the number of siblings is statistically controlled.
CONCLUSION: The apparent birth-order effect on intelligence may actually be due to family size. Since children largely inherit their intellects and less intelligent parents tend to raise more kids, the offspring of larger families tend to be at a cognitive disadvantage.
IMPLICATION: So why do smarter parents have fewer children? "More intelligent people are more likely to do unnatural things or things for which they are not evolutionarily designed to do," says Kanazawa, "and having fewer children is one such unnatural thing."

Mrs. Uhlenbeck's diary is an exceptional memoir filled with insightful observations and ethnological gems gleaned from her extraordinary powers of observation. Supplying a humanistic memoir, her diary significantly supplements the Blackfeet texts recorded by her husband. With her memorable account we meet the Blackfeet on personal terms that give them a familiar character and deep-seated humanity.

Accompanied by his student J.P.B. de Josselin de Jong (1886-1964), Dutch linguist, Professor Dr. C. C. Uhlenbeck (1866-1951), spent the summer of 1910 at the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana to study the Blackfoot language. Not much is known about his time then. In the summer of 1911 Uhlenbeck went there again, this time accompanied by his wife, Wilhelmina Maria Uhlenbeck-Melchior (1862-1954). .
Mrs. Uhlenbeck not only took care of her ‘neurasthenic’ husband under challenging circumstances, but also kept a diary. Through this diary, published with the results of Uhlenbeck’s 1910-1911 fieldwork, under the title Montreal 1911: a Professor and his Wife among the Blackfeet, we not only learn how much trouble the weather, the people, the food, and her husband gave her, but also how Uhlenbeck conducted fieldwork for his 1911 and 1912 publications on Blackfoot language and culture.
After Montana 1911 was published in 2005, a number of Dutch scholars assembled and put their pens to paper on Uhlenbeck’s work. The result of this cooperation is reviewed in this volume.
