Wu Cheng-wen (1938- ) Academician, Academia Sinica
,
When I thought about the good old days in high school and at Taida, perhaps the following additional information might be of interest to some Taida classmates. So please pass it on.
As you no doubt still remember, Kuo-yu (Trudy) Wu's mother taught at Fu Chung for a long time, and was considered one of the finest English teachers around. No wonder, Trudy's English was so good.
Trudy's husband, Chia-Chuan Lee, was in the famed 1957 Fu Chung class (Shih Yen Ban, Experiment Class). Professor Wei-hsiung Su of Wai-Wen Dept. (Notably English poetry class) had a son in the same Shih Yen Ban as Lee's. His name was Ming-yang Su, a top graduate, who was admitted to Taida mechanical engineering dept. without taking the entrance exam.
Shih Yen Ban (Experiment Class) was a unique educational program in Fu Chung whereby first- year junior high students (7th graders) were grouped in the same class based upon their IQ test results. Instead of the traditional 3-3 system of high school, Shih Yen Ban students received a 4-2 system of education (4 years of junior high and 2 years of senior high) , with no need to take entrance exam to Fu Chung Senior High-- a novel educational philosophy advocated by Shihda, the parent school. Chia Yee Girls High might be the only other high school in Taiwan having a similiar program (Chia-chu Lu can verify this).
Shih Yen Ban education at Fu Chung was a highly successful phenomenon. 1956 Fu Chung class marked the first year of Shih Yen Ban graduating class. Your in-law, Yee Tsu Chien, was in that Shih Yen Ban, which produced the top student, Woo Gee Tung, entering Taida's physics dept. 1957 Shih Yen Ban placed first in both physics (Kuang Tsu Tsung) and civil engineering (Fan Yu) at Taida. Another Shih Yen Ban graduate, Cheng-Wen Wu <吳成文 Wu Cheng-wen MD, PhD (1938- ) Academician, Academia Sinica> admitted to Taida medical college that year, later became the head of Taiwan Health Institutes. 1958 Shih Yen Ban graduates include Chung-jen Tan (Lorrain Meng's husband), and Tong- yuan Tai, (戴東源 Tai, Tong-Yuan 戴東源醫學院) who was admitted to Taida medical college, and later became a diabetes expert and head of National Taiwan University Hospital.
Take care and have a nice week !
