Thoughts on teaching and learning... A positive, engaging, relevant experience is essential for all individuals in the learning environment, igniting inquiry and supporting critical thinking and problem-solving, and inspiring learners to become lifelong learners.
As the wildflowers in the field are diverse and varied, so are learners' needs, interests and learning styles. Therefore, it is necessary that that the instructor become adept at and use a variety of teaching and assessment strategies to meet learners' varied needs. Whilst meeting learners' diverse needs, there is also value in helping learners develop grit and perseverance in their studies. Assuring learners that struggles are evidence of learning and growth and encouraging a growth mindset can be the key to success for the reluctant or discouraged student.
The well-rounded, successful student is one that is not only embracing their academic pursuits, but also engaged in the community around them. Encouraging learners to connect with others in a healthy, respectful manner to develop a sense of connection and community can help support them when they struggle.
All of this in mind, it is my goal as an educator to assist learners in
(a) developing critical thinking skills and problem-solving strategies,
(b) acquiring lifelong learning skills in an information-rich society,
(c) utilizing feedback to support future personal, academic, and professional growth, and
(d) developing respectful relationships and a sense of community.
