Jeffrey Allen Hines

(12th Generation - Jamestown 1629)

Garland and Loretta Hines. Garland served in the United States Army and was wounded at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was active in the military most of his life, with the Reserves he worked his way up to Lieutenant Colonel. Loretta raised five children (Cynthia, Bill, Nancy, Jeff, and Beth) and specialized in the preparation of various ethnic foods including Perogies, Gnocchi, Stuffed Manicotti, Tomato Soup, and desserts that were out of this world.  The neighborhood demographics consisting of Jewish, Italian, Polish, Irish and others probably influenced her cooking diversity.

1950's

A recent study indicates that your life can be extended by as much as 20% if you listen to music at least one time a day. This site is believes this to be true and provides one song for each year indicating an event or positive reinforcement to support this.

Jeffrey is the fourth of five children of Garland and Loretta. Born March 21, 1955 in Hackensack, New Jersey. He grew up in Elmwood Park, New Jersey (originally called East Paterson) on 18th Avenue (the picture above was a view showing across the street from 95 18th Avenue in the early 1950's), a four bedroom two bathroom two story home.  In 1890, East Paterson had the only mile long racetrack in the state.   People from all over, including as far as Pennsylvania and New York State came to watch harness racing on a grandstand one block long.

1955 - Rock Around The Clock - Bill Haley

1959 - Earliest memories include watching Captain Kangaroo and the Mickey Mouse Club. Picture is of Jeff downstairs in East Paterson.

1959 - The Mickey Mouse March

A holiday staple, many television stations in the US showed this film near Thanksgiving time each year during the '60s and '70s. In more recent years, it has been shown in some markets on Christmas Day.

Loretta, Nancy, Beth, and Jeff at the New York World's fair around 1964. In 1960 Jeff attended 16th Avenue Kindergarten in East Paterson.  In 1961 he attended St Anne's Parochial School in Fair Lawn, New Jersey as his brother Bill and two sisters Cynthia and Nancy did before and  sister Beth did after him.

Where were you when John F. Kennedy was Assassinated?

The assassination of John F. Kennedy, the thirty-fifth President of the United States, took place on Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, USA at 12:30 p.m. CST. John F. Kennedy was fatally wounded by gunshots while riding with his wife Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy in a Presidential motorcade.  I was at School in 2nd Grade (Sister Regis Class) and remember a lot of crying. Jeff  graduated from St. Anne's in June 1969 ranked somewhere in the middle of his class.  Many of the teachers of the schools were nuns that were highly educated, personable, kind and generally good natured.

Beatlemania

On 7 February 1964, a crowd of four thousand fans at Heathrow Airport waved to The Beatles as they took off for their first trip to the United States as a group. They were accompanied by photographers, journalists (including Maureen Cleave), and Phil Spector, who had booked himself on the same flight. When the group arrived at New York's newly renamed John F. Kennedy Airport, they were greeted by a large crowd. The airport had never experienced such a crowd, estimated at about 3,000 fans.

Beth (the punishment fit the crime, whatever it was) and Jeff in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Several times in the 1960's the Hines family visited Williamsburg Virginia on Vacation.   The Colonial Capital set in 18th Century Virginia was a favorite place to visit. Other vacation's were spent at the Jersey Shore including Point Pleasant, Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Minnesota, and a trip to the West Coast to visit Bill Hines who lived in the San Diego area.

First Man on the Moon

The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of Project Apollo and the third human voyage to the Moon. It was also the second all-veteran crew in manned spaceflight history. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene 'Buzz' Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Collins orbited above.

FAVORITE TELEVISION SHOWS

Get Smart is an American comedy television series that satirized the secret agent genre. Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, the show starred Don Adams as Maxwell Smart as Agent 86, and Barbara Feldon as Agent 99 of CONTROL, a secret U.S. government spy agency.

Where was Trump when you needed someone to bribe the Sister to give Jeff better grades? This report card was issued in June 1964 and included the year that Kennedy was assassinated.

In November 2008 the East Paterson High School class of 1973 held a 35 year reunion.  Some of the  early memories from classmates include:

There was a candy store across the street; I use to buy two or three pieces of Bazooka bubble gum for a penny. After our family moved to the other side of town, near the Grand Union shopping center. Other wise known as “the stores”. I spent many a times there. After collecting soda bottles, from where ever, and cashing the deposit in at the GU. With this money I would go down to Kress and buy an ice cream cone for about 10 cents. While there I would check all the pay phones to see if anyone left a dime or some other change in the change return. If I was lucky enough to find any money, off to Kress again for another ice cream cone!

I loved the little cubbies at Neiseners shoe repair. I was able to buy cigarettes for my mom at Walgreen’s when I was like 10 years old maybe even younger no questions asked! Can’t do that today! I went to St Anne’s now. The one most memorable time I had there was the day that JFK was shot and killed. Our class and some other classes all piled into one classroom to watch, apparently the only television the school had, the events of that horrible day unravel. We all sat on the floor watching, as we cried. I also remember the day Bobby Kennedy was assassinated, as well as Martin Luther King. Oh boy, the chaos that caused!

Wow, all these posts already is great. I knew Georges meat market very well, Goosey night and pillow cases full of candy, baseball cards in my spokes, paper routes, and what about when the lumber yard in Fair Lawn burned down. I bowled at Hy-Way lanes too in 5th grade. I went to the Paramus roller rink and of course Hillmans golf. And they did have skating there but my father used to take me to Barbours pond in Paterson by Garret Mountain. Jimmy's pizza was the best in the US and how about when he was the cook at the IAPC and they had a fair in the parking lot there. I used to go to Wildwood Crest every summer and one of my earliest memories is riding the merry go round at the shore and going clam digging and playing box-ball on the beach. We had a great little town and I had a very happy childhood there. One note about Hillman's golf course.  Growing up in the 60's I remember going to the miniature golf course, driving range, and there was a short par 3 course.  Local people recall that the actor Lou Costello, who grew up in Paterson New Jersey played on this course.

St. Annes Parochial School, Fair Lawn, New Jersey 7th Grade Class in 1968.  Jeff is in the back row, to the right of the middle. Jeff played baseball for St Ann's and hit two home runs in his first game. His promising baseball career went downhill after since he did not hit another home run the rest of the season.

1970's

In September 1969 Jeff attended Elmwood Park High School.  During the four years he attended high school the football team won four state titles.  In his senior year the wrestling team went 11-1 and was ranked 2nd in the county, the basketball team went 23-5, and the football team beat the 3rd ranked team in the Country 21-0.

1969-70 New York Knicks

A charter member of the NBA, the New York Knicks were still seeking their first league championship in 1969-70, when a heady coach named Red Holzman took a team of talented individuals and blended them seamlessly into an outstanding unit which used basketball basics like "Hit the open man" and "See the ball" as its credos.

Jeff's undistinguished parochial school baseball career was followed closely by an equally undistinguished high school baseball and basketball career. During one basketball game in his Junior year he played against a team from Eastside High in Paterson NJ. Elmwood Park won the game and while leaving the other team and its fans were so appreciative of our efforts they started throwing rocks at the bus.

1970 - East Paterson Track team (Jeff is on the far left) track meet at Clifton High School. Highlight was going across the street from the stadium and buying bagels from a Jewish Deli.

More memories from the November 2008 the East Paterson High School class of 1973 35 year reunion.

I got my school uniforms at Lobels. Knee socks, plaid skirt and white or yellow blouses were a true fashion statement! The open field that Grand Way was going to be built on was giant hills of snow in the winter. Spent lots of time climbing those hills and making forts. (Got home late from school and in trouble because of it) Sleigh riding at 16th ave school hill. My hands use to get so cold and my feet were numb. That hill doesn’t look as big now as it did then. I went to the parks and recreation day camp too. I went to the park on Doremus? The big round park off the Boulevard. The merry go round was fun spinning round and round while sitting on the very top. Making some sort of craft and playing games. It was a blast.

When I was in junior high and up my best friends were Joyce Molinari and Debbie Berger, we use to go up to the stores quite frequently. Shopping at Canadians for clothes. The Annual Bazaar at St. Anne’s was fun!

During Halloween we would go out the night before, "goosey night" I think it was called, and raise havoc throughout the neighborhoods, getting chased by the local authorities. During that time of year my family would take our annual trip to Tice's farm and go on pony rides. You could buy a plastic cup for like 5 cents and drink as much apple cider from the barrel as you wanted. Nowadays, I can't look at another cup of apple cider.

In my neck of the woods, our families would all gather outside in the court during warm evenings. Someone would bring out a tv and all would hang out and eat and enjoy each others company. We were all so close in that court back then, weren't we. The boys were always positioning for the girls attention and the girls loved it. The original McDonald's drive up was a favorite of mine and the cyo bus trips to Seaside Heights were always an interesting event. I still love that place! I left our hometown after graduation and didn't look back for many many years. It has only been recently that I have come to realize how preciously important my hometown and childhood friends are to me.

1972 - Playing stickball at 16th Avenue School in East Paterson.  When Jeff got his first driver's license he went to Steve's pizzeria to apply for a job. Steve's used Volkswagens which had stickshifts which Jeff was unfamiliar with. Jeff immediately ran home and asked his neighbor Bill Pikarsky to teach him to drive a stick. He received a phone call from Steve's indicating he could start work immediately. Jeff was told to go to a nearby parking lot to practice driving the Volkswagen. It must have been a funny sight to see Jeff going circles and stall eventually Steve came out and told Jeff to go home.

Jeff was a right handed pitcher with a fastball that did not quite register on the radar gun. He rode the bench most of the season until the coach had no choice to start him in one of the last meaningless games of the season. Several balls shot by him faster than he pitched them with infielders and outfielders requesting life insurance policies be included in their contracts when he pitched. After seeing him attempt to bat during one high school game, baseball soon implemented the designated hitter rule as a safeguard to protect fans from seeing him hit (or so the story goes).   Jeff graduated in June 1973.  Some of his recreational activities included Stickball, Bikeriding thru Northeast New Jersey and New York State visiting many of the places that George Washington ate at, slept at, fought at, etc.

1972 - Junior Varsity basketball team at East Paterson High School. Safe to say no plays were ran for Jeff.

In 1973 Bruce Springsteen performed in our town: Einstein said , Do not clutter your memory with facts that can be looked up in books. So that's why I have saved a lot of books and I think I have the book Jeff Hines read about the Mr. D's Springsteen appearance. Springsteen Blinded By The Light ,by Patrick Humphries & Chris Hunt 1985 ,Page 79-80, August 1973 Aug. 1,2&3 Asbury Park , New Jersey, Convention Center Aug. 14 Cherry Hill,New Jersey,Erlton Lounge Aug. 16 East Paterson, New Jersey , Mr. D's Aug. 20/26 Boston, Mass. , Olivers Aug. 31/Sept 2 Seaside Heights, New Jersey , Fat City. The Wild , The Innocent , & The E Street Shuffle was released roughly a month after (Sept 11) the Mr. D's gig to give you a feeling of where Bruce was in terms of his career when he played or was scheduled to play EP. I've got a funny story about it . Greg Gearo (79) & I actually met Bruce before the second concert at what was then called 'The Brendon Byrne Arena" on July 3,1981. We happened to stumble into the arena and onto a catwalk above Bruce's dressing room, a complete case of blind luck or reward for our tenacity, but any way, we did tell him where we were from and he had played a club in our hometown named Mr. D's and he replied, " AWW , THAT DUMP !" I didn't know about the country/western thing Tom Kistler remembers but maybe there was a Columbia Records connection that got the date for Mr. D's. That's what he said when we mentioned it and Bruce did give us tickets to the show. It's at least part of the book I've written in my head a million times and one of my friends said to me, after I told him the story , that it gives me free admission to any campfire

Blazing Saddles (1974) is a satiric Western comedy film directed by Mel Brooks. Starring Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder, it was written by Brooks, Andrew Bergman, Richard Pryor, Norman Steinberg, and Al Uger, and was based on Bergman's story and draft.  The movie is considered one of the great American comedies of all time, coming in at number six in AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs list.

1974 - Bergen Community Baseball Team, Jeff is in the middle back row.

Jeffrey received a New Jersey State Scholarship to attend College. He attended Bergen Community College from 1973 thru 1975. He pitched for the baseball team his first year, breaking spring training as the teams 8th pitcher, by mid season he had started several key games, the highlight was a three hitter against Brookdale Community College (ranked in the top 10 teams in the country) which put B.C.C. in first place for a short time.

YANKEES WIN THE WORLD SERIES

The 1977 World Series matched the returning American League champion New York Yankees against the Los Angeles Dodgers of the National League, with the Yankees winning the Series in six games. Billy Martin won what would be his only World Series title as a manager after guiding the Yankees to a second straight pennant.

In April 1978 Jeff decided to head west (apparently influenced by songs by the Beach Boys and Mama's and Papa's during his youth). He drove across country in a 1968 Chevy Nova and settled near the Pacific Ocean in the beach community of Belmont Shore in Long Beach, California.

Top - Jeff met Laura Lambert, his future wife, at a Halloween party in Long Beach on October 28, 1978.  Below - They lived in a 2 bedroom apartment one and one half blocks from the beach in Belmont Shore for approximately 7 years.  Both Laura's car (left) and Jeff's car (right) are pictured.

John Lennon Assassinated

The scene outside New York's spooky old Dakota apartment building on the evening of December 8, 1980, was as surreal as it was horrifying. John Lennon, probably the world's most famous rock star, lay semiconscious, hemorrhaging from four flat-tipped bullets blasted into his back. His wife Yoko Ono held his head in her arms and screamed (just like on her early albums).

1988 - Backyard of the first House purchased in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jeff purchased almost 50 properties from the late 1980's thru 2008 in Nevada.

Songs from the 1980's

Laura Lambert is the 4th of four children and was born December 6, 1956 in Kankakee, Illinois. At the age of four her family moved to California. Laura's family lived in Garden Grove, California, and she attended schools in the Garden Grove Unified School District until she began college at CSULB in September 1975.

Not knowing what to study in school, Laura decided to become a PE major because she enjoyed gymnastics and seemed like as good of a reason as any. She graduated in December 1979 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and immediately flew to England as an exchange student.

Some interesting facts are that Laura did her student teaching at La Quinta HS in Garden Grove in 1980 and then from 1999 - 2002 she taught English there! English you think??? Yes, Laura never taught full time as a PE teacher; she taught English for 17 years.

The Whittier Narrows earthquake struck the southern San Gabriel Valley and surrounding communities of southern California at 7:42 a.m. (Pacific Daylight Time) on October 1, 1987. The magnitude 5.9 earthquake epicenter was actually in the town of Rosemead, California, at a depth of 11 km. Jeff was on his way to work in Long Beach at the time of the jolt, he noticed that his car swerved slightly as if he had a flat tire.

In May 1988 they purchased a single story home in Las Vegas Nevada.  This was used as a rental thru most of the 1990's until they decided to use it as their second home in the late 1990's.   During this time several condo's were purchased in Henderson Nevada and used as rental properties.   In addition several condo's were purchased in Long Beach for the same purpose.

On December 3, 1988 at 3:38am the Pasadena Earthquake was felt in the Hines Household in Long Beach.  The magnitude 5.0 earthquake caused the support Trusses to move several inches in their two story condo at "The Lakes" but caused no damage except for a bout of anxiety.

Favorite Filmmaker

Ken Burns has been making documentary films for more than twenty years. Since the Academy Award nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, he has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. Stephen Ambrose, the historian, has said of Ken's films, "More Americans get their history from Ken Burns than any other source."

1995

Jeffrey and Laura married on April 29, 1995 in Laguna Beach, California. Their wedding took place at sunset in Crescent Bay Park which overlooks the Pacific Ocean.   The reception was held at Five Crowns Inn.

1996

Nine months and twelve days after they were married Rhiannon Hines was born on February 10, 1996 in Los Alamitos, California.

1997

During this time they lived in a two bedroom two story condo on the east side of Long Beach, California near California State University Long Beach.  The community was called "The Lakes".    In the mid 1990's  Jeff obtained a Real Estate Brokers License in Nevada and California.

In December 2001 a swimming pool and jacuzzi was added to their  home in 7 Hills and was completed by January 2002.

FAVORITE MUSIC

Sir James Paul McCartney, MBE (born 18 June 1942) is an English rock singer, bass guitarist, songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, entrepreneur, record producer, film producer and animal-rights activist. He gained worldwide fame as a member of The Beatles, with John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. McCartney and Lennon formed one of the most influential and successful songwriting partnerships and "wrote some of the most popular music in rock and roll history"

On April 5, 2002 Jeff George and Roy went to see Paul McCartney perform at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In August 2002 The Hines Family moved to  7 Hills in Henderson Nevada.   On August 18th, 2002 Jeff and Roy went to see Bruce Springsteen perform at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.  Jeff worked out of his home office as a Real Estate Broker.  Most of his work involved purchasing foreclosures at an auction located in downtown Las Vegas.

Wildwood New Jersey

The real estate market was good and most of the properties he purchased were remodeled and sold in a short period of time. In September 2002 Rhiannon attended 1st Grade at Wolfe Elementary School. Rhiannon participated in golf and tennis lessons. A living trust was set up for Rhiannon for her college education. Within a few years it was fully funded ($300,000.00)..

By the summer of 2004 the real estate market in Las Vegas started to slow and enter into a prolonged recession which is in its fourth year at this time.  In August Jeff, Rhiannon, George and Brittany visited Wildwood New Jersey and Knoebel's Amusement Park in Pennsylvania. In December of 2005 George, Precy and Brittany visited the Hines family in Henderson Nevada.  They took a tour of the area communities that displayed Christmas lights.

In the spring of 2006 Jeff's sister Nancy told him of a book about his fathers side of the family.  Nancy had a copy and sent it to him.  Jeff visited Virginia soon after and had the pleasure of meeting Angus and Tom Hines who gave Jeff a tour of the Virginia countryside including places where his Dad and ancestors lived. In August 2006 Jeff and Rhiannon along with George and Brittany visited Elmwood Park, Gettysburg, Williamsburg, Washington DC, Wildwood, The Pocono's and Koebel's Amusement Park in Pa.

In late June of 2007 Jeff Laura Rhiannon Buttercup and Sandy got in an RV and headed to Virginia to visit friends and relatives.  George, Precy and Brittany met the Hines at the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg.  From there Jeff and George went exploring in the Virginia Countryside while the girls went to Busch Gardens.  Angus invited a number of family members to go out on his Yacht and tour the Hampton Roads area . In December 2007 while playing golf on the 157 yard par 3 7th hole at the Desert Willow Golf Course in Henderson when Jeff hit the ball off the tee the golf ball unexpectedly went in the hole.

In July 2008 the Hines family rented an RV and drove across the United States.   After starting North and traveling thru Utah, Colorado, Kansas, stopping in Kansas City at the Great Wolf Lodge.  Next stop was Illinois at Laura's parents house.   Laura Rhiannon Buttercup and Roxy stayed in Illinois, Jeff headed east.   He stopped at Gettysburg PA, Elmwood Park, New Jersey, Rahway New Jersey then headed south to Virginia.  Staying in Williamsburg, Jeff spent a few days in Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown.  One day was spent with his cousin Tommy and his son Trey on the Golf Course and later in the day on Tommy's boat sailing the James River and Hampton Roads area.  Next up was a visit with Ann, Dutch and Tom to the Chuckatuck Grist Mill where the Hines family started in America in the 17th Century.  Ann Dutch and Jeff then visited Boykins Virginia where the Hines Buggy Works was at the turn of the 20th Century.   They visited Murfreesboro NC, Sussex County Courthouse and Fortsville Virginia where James Thomas lived in the 19th Century.  Angus and Jeff traveling south visited Fort Fisher and Bentonville North Carolina to visit where James Thomas fought in the Civil War.   On the return trip to New Jersey Jeff picked up Rhiannon at the airport and they proceeded with George and Brittany to Wildwood New Jersey for a few days of fun and relaxation.

In October 2008 David L and Jeff played golf at the Wynn Las Vegas Resort golf course.  The course was absolutely magnificent with tree lined fairways and plenty of streams and lakes in which Jeff and David viewed more directly then they would have cared to which accounted for their high scores.  They were assisted by a caddie who improved Jeff's game, however the caddie can only do so much.

There are few defining moments in United States History, spanning over 400 years.  We experienced one on November 4, 2008 in the general election for President of the United States. Barack Obama, the first African American was elected President. The nation celebrated the event with a sense of pride that has rarely occurred not only throughout the USA but all over the world.   A truly historic day. Personally I experienced a sense of admiration and respect for our country, this country that started out mostly as castoff's from so called civilized parts of the world that has evolved into something special that is the envy of the free world and has the uncanny ability to correct it's deficiencies. One weekend in November the Hines family went to Draper Utah to visit their good friends the Searle family and their goat Sammy.  In late December 2008 we started the move to Williamsburg Virginia.

WILLIAMSBURG VIRGINIA

Laura, daughter Rhiannon and I were sitting around in the living room of our friend’s home located in Henderson Nevada, in the foothills overlooking the Las Vegas Strip.   Mike, an Anesthesiologist, and his wife Deanna had 6 wonderful children, they are Mormon’s.  We sat discussing our family trees.  Mike told us stories of his parents, grandparents and their ancestors including a relationship to the actor Danny Devito.  When asked about my ancestors I thought for a second, indicated that I didn’t know much about my Grandparents, they were not around while I was growing up and my father did not provide any details about them either.

Soon after that night I had a telephone conversation with my sister who lives near Orlando Florida.  I told her about my evening at our friend’s house and my lack of contribution to the stories of that night.  My sister indicated that she knew of a book about the Hines family, and that our family was on page 122 of this rather thick book.   I asked her to send it to me.    From the day that book arrived my life has changed considerably.  The book indicated both my fathers’ grandparents lived in New York City and died within 20 days of each other in 1932, when my dad was in his early teens.  Apparently he and his sister went to live with my grandmothers relatives.

A security guard greeted us and indicated that there were Buffalo down the country road about a mile from our location. Jeff took off on his bicycle and after about a mile and half did not see any but came across an open gate leading to a mobile trailer. Outside the trailer was a pickup truck . Jeff knocked on the door of the trailer and a Native American named Fire hydrant (he indicated his parents had a sense of humor) who said that he would drive Jeff to the Buffalo which you see above.

BUTTERCUP

THE GENTLE GOLDEN RETRIEVER

August 2002- December 29, 2018

At the turn of this century, to ease the move from Long Beach to Henderson for our daughter who was entering first grade, we searched the classified for a puppy. What we found was not just any puppy. When we brought Butterfly, well we changed the name to Buttercup, after convincing our daughter that the latter was better than the former, at least for a dog. Buttercup came from a home that still had her parents and grandparents living. We found this disconcerning but also very special. This pint sized puppy had a smile and disposition that was unique. We had four dogs prior to this.

We would take Buttercup to a park that had a baseball field near our house to let her get some exercise. I removed the leash one time only to see her sit on the grass and behold an amazing site. All along the outfield, from left field to right, were hundreds of rabbits that were feasting along the edge of the outfield grass.  Buttercup gazed at the bunnies and immediately bolted towards them. Starting from left field, one by one the bunnies saw the Golden Retriever heading towards them, and immediately went back into the bushes from where they came. This magnificent dog was in full stride as she transversed the edge of the baseball field. It was at that moment that I realized just how fast a Golden Retriever was. In a matter of seconds Buttercup had crossed the baseball field, from left field to center to right. Her legs appeared to be off the ground as she attempted to catch one of the bunnies before they went into hiding. It almost appeared that she had no intention of catching any of the bunnies. I also realized that if she wanted to keep going that there was nothing I could do to prevent her from leaving us.

A funny thing happened when she got the edge of right field with still no rabbits in her possession. She stopped and looked back only to see that some of the bunnies had come out from hiding and lined the field again. These were probably Trump supporters that did not know any better. Buttercup took off chasing the bunnies who again had to duck into the bushes as she approached them. Buttercup in a few blinks of an eye made it back to us. I was relieved and Buttercup was still hungry. I did not scold her for living up to the breed that her fellow canines were known for. Buttercup was a classy dog who only barked when it was important to do so and always listened to commands the way someone in the armed forces is taught to. She had to live with two large dogs during her lifetime which may explain her tendency to be nervous especially with large sounds causing her to shake and to go into hiding in some safe corner of the house. Buttercup lived to be a ripe old age but recently passed at the dog age of about 130 years old. Today she decided that it was time and simply lay down and went to sleep. She had been a loyal companion through the many years that she graced our lives. If there is something good that could be said from her passing is that we did not overfeed her like the other four dogs we had who’s legs gave out but their eyes still had life when we had to put them to sleep. Sleep well Buttercup, you will be missed.

WALK WITH YOU - THE STORY OF DRED SCOTT AND THE BLOW FAMILY OF VIRGINIA

In 1857, the President and Chief Justice of the United States attempted to make slavery universal. Only eight children stood in their way, this is their story.

A Film to be displayed at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.

Based on Dred Scott's Virginia

By J A Hines

LOGLINE: Set in Antebellum America a slave finds that his continued relationship with the white children that grew up with him are stronger than his desire to live a simple life. The result will have lasting effects on the history of the world.

SYNOPSIS:

Dred Scott’s Virginia by Jeffrey Allen Hines is an historical non-fiction about Dred Scott and the Blow family of Southampton County, Virginia. Walk With You is based on this book. An integral part of this book is the Blow Family’s financial support of Dred Scott in his pursuit of  freedom for himself, his wife, and two daughters, that culminated in the 1857 Supreme Court Decision that bears his name.

Dred was probably the most traveled popular servant in United States History. Scott and his family traveled over five thousand miles through 19th Century America. He briefly encountered four United States President's, two wannabe Presidents, an inventor, an explorer, a writer, and two freedom fighters. In his travels across 19th century America he met two Native American chiefs that saw peaceful coexistence as a solution and two commanding Generals whose armies fought the greatest battles on American soil. All of these people shared valuable insights on the major topic of the day that influenced Dred’s decision to seek freedom for his family. These encounters with Dred are secondary to Dred’s relationship with the children he raised and grew up with spanning five decades during the first part of the 19th Century. A time that shaped the path of our country.

July 7th, our loveably almost 14 year old black lab went to doggy heaven today where she is undoubtedly eating everything resembling food and then some. When we took her home in Henderson Nevada in 2008 she was very small perhaps only 10 lbs. By the end of the year she was over a hundred pounds. Did I mention Roxy loved food?

We have had six dogs and Roxy was the most special. For some reason for the first year or two she was very quiet. Not a woof out of her. However, I came home one day and for the first time I heard her quietly woof. It was similar to hearing a baby talk for the first time. Roxy also like to snuggle. Sometimes it seemed like you could hear her dreaming of steaks and chicken. She didn't bark that often usually when she wanted food (about 10 times a day). She also barked at strangers. The sight of seeing a 100 lb black lab eye them like a piece of steak usually sent them on their way in a hurry.

Roxy had a tendency to roam. When we moved to Virginia I opened the back door to let her go out where there was a large forest. It was night time and Roxy quickly ran into the woods I yelled at the top of my lungs (food and Roxy not necessarily in that order) and luckily after a few minutes she came back. Roxy will be missed. It's time to find a Roxy Junior because she was that special and should always be a part of your life.

If the 2020s are going to be the decade of AI, then the 2030s could be the decade of fusion power — that is, if the sector’s startups are able to deliver.

Fusion power has never had a more solid foundation. Advances in semiconductors, magnets and, yes, artificial intelligence have driven fusion power forward faster than at any time in the last few decades. And over the last few years, startups in the sector have raised over $6 billion, according to the Fusion Industry Association.

That investment wouldn’t be possible if there weren’t startups to fund, and founders have been eager to meet the challenge. There are now dozens of fusion power startups probing a range of different approaches to reactor design. Which one will succeed? The race is wide open at this point.

Though few believed it was possible, Ukraine has persevered. More than a year after the big war began, it’s obvious that Russia hasn’t reached its strategic goals, which means Ukraine is winning. But our focus isn’t just on winning the war, it’s also on winning the peace.

So, what does that mean for Ukraine?

For Ukraine, winning the peace means the country must change from within — and it is already doing so. We are talking about the large-scale modernization and transformation of our country. And we believe we should use this reform momentum to lay the foundation for fundamental change.

The seven habits that lead to happiness in old age

Don’t smoke—or if you already smoke, quit now. You might not succeed on your first try, but the earlier you start the quitting process, the more smoke-free years you can invest in your happiness account.

Watch your drinking. Alcohol abuse is strongly correlated with smoking in the Harvard study, but plenty of other research shows that even by itself, it is one of the most powerful predictors of winding up sad-sick. If you have any indication of problem drinking in your life, get help now. If you have drinking problems in your family, do not take your chances: Keep that switch turned off. Although forgoing alcohol can be difficult, you’ll never be sorry you made this decision.

Maintain a healthy body weight. Eat a diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and moderate serving sizes, but avoid yo-yo diets or intense restrictions that you can’t maintain over the long run.

Prioritize movement in your life by scheduling time for it every day and sticking to it. Arguably the single best, time-tested way to do this is by walking daily.

Practice your coping mechanisms now. The earlier you can find healthy ways to deal with life’s inevitable distresses, the more prepared you’ll be if ill luck strikes in your 80s. This means working consciously—perhaps with assistance from spiritual practices or even therapy—to avoid excessive rumination, unhealthy emotional reactions, or avoidance behavior.

Keep learning. More education leads to a more active mind in old age, and that means a longer, happier life. That doesn’t mean that you need to go to Harvard; you simply need to engage in lifelong, purposive learning. For example, that can mean reading serious nonfiction as part of a routine to learn more about new subjects.

Do the work to cultivate stable, long-term relationships now. For most people, this includes a steady marriage, but other relationships with family, friends, and partners can fit in this category as well. The point is to find people with whom you can grow, whom you can count on, no matter what comes your way.
