Everyone,
We've had some great recommendations from people regarding the snow, cold, and ice. We'll list them here, and will update as they come in. Thanks!
1. If you have a driveway, or somewhere off street you can park, that is the best place to keep your vehicle. It lets the snowplows do their job with less hassle, and it also removes your car from the slippery roads, decreasing the chances it will get hit!
2. There is no better time to get out and meet your neighbors! Some people are blessed with snowthrowers, others with strong backs. If you can lend either to a neighbor it is always appreciated.
3. DRIVE SAFELY! Whether you have a four-wheel drive, a two-wheel drive, or two legs, it's hazardous out there. Drive slowly, obey stop signs, watch for people shoveling or children playing close to the road, people getting out of vehicles, etc. For such a short distance, driving 10 miles an hour instead of 25 will NOT make any difference.
4. Clear snow & ice from around FIRE HYDRANTS and DON'T let anyone park in front of them. According to Fire Chief on news tonight, approximately 3' on all sides for accessibility.
5. Find your storm drains & dig snow & ice from around them, dig "trenches" ro channel the melt from center of road to the drains & down side of road (gutter) to drains. Melting snow needs a way to run to drain during the day, thus avoiding dangerous slabs of black ice from developing in streets.
6. Chop & remove ice from where your sump pump discharges into the street. Again this is to prevent ice patches from forming.
7. Be part of the solution & not part of the problem. Some neighbors might not be able to remove snow as well or quick enough due to illness or injury. so knock & ask if they need help. On the other hand, tell a neighbor if you need help. "The squeaky wheel gets the grease."
