There's a lot of talk back and forth about "environmentalism", "green", "recycling", and many other terms in the news these days. While there can be a lot of emotions - people arguing and yelling back and forth - there are many "green" things you can do that are cheaper, easier, safer, and many times work just as well, if not better, than the commercial products.
Want to make your own household cleaners? Suprisingly, you don't need to call a major chemical manufacturer to make a safe and effective cleaner. Reusing a window cleaner spray bottle with some vinegar and water makes a great cleaner. Putting a plant inside your home can not only liven up your living space, but it cleans the air - and brightens your health and your mood. And for those pesky outdoor weeds? Well, sometimes you do have to find a commercial product that is both safe for you and your family (pets included!) But as Pat has found, there are non-toxic ways to get rid of them.
Since you were speaking of gardening, there are a couple of things I would like to share.
Natural dandelion and Bermuda grass killer: I got this from a magazine years ago and it works quite well and it was from landscape consultant.
Combine three parts of vinegar (10% concentration) with one part liquid soap and spray. Real easy and cheap and safe around animals. It does work.
For the thistle that we all seem to have, the only thing I found that works is a product called "Burn Out" which can be purchased at Valley View Farms. So far, they seem to be the only one that stocks it. It is also safe to use around animals. It is expensive so use sparingly and spray it directly on the center of the thistle.
I did a lot of research on the thistle years ago. It is an invasive weed in Maryland. Do not dig it up as the roots break and still grow in the ground. Do not let it get tall enough to bud as these are what help spread it.
Hope this helps.
