Description of Activities (source: CatzCoach: Practice 04 - BU8)
Coordination - Motor Skills Level 1 (Line Formation): Line Formation: Jog,
Gallop, Skip, Side Shuffle, Walk/Jog Backwards, Butt Kickers, Thigh Taps
Keep Away - Throw and Catch: Create a 20 x 20 yard grid with four cones. Split
the players into two teams. To get a point, a team has to make 10 passes without
losing the ball or dropping it. Players cannot run with the ball and need to pass
within three seconds. If the ball is dropped, the other team gets it.
Dribbling - Step-On, Bells, Verbal Cue: Have players find some space and
slowly step lightly on top of their ball with each foot. Then have players jog in
place behind their ball and call out “Toe Taps”. Each player should immediately
begin toe taps. If the coach says “beside the ball” each player should move to the
side of the ball and do 10 jumps, straight up and down. If the coach says “in front
of the ball”, each player should move to the front of the ball and do 5 jumping
jacks. “Behind the ball” means more Toe Taps.
Dribbling - Attacking: Use 4 cones to create a 20 x 10 yard grid. Each player
has their own ball. Players dribble down the 10 yd length of the field using all parts
of their right foot and making short touches. Turn and come back still using right
foot. Repeat and then do the same with the left foot.
1v1 - Play Out: Set up a goal with a keeper. One player feeds the ball from the
side of the goal to a player 20 yards away. That player becomes a defender and
the other player has to dribble by the defender and take a shot.
Throw-Ins - Intro: Line up players about 10 yards apart from each other and give
each pair a ball. They should simply practice throwing the ball to each other
working on the technique. Coaching cues include keeping both feet on the
ground, bringing the ball back with both hands directly over their heads, arch the
back, usually throw the ball downfield. Think “Step – Throw”.
Scrimmage - Boys: Break the players up into two teams. Have the kids play
soccer, get lots of touches, and work on moves that were taught during the
practice. You can or cannot include a keeper. Keep it light and fun.
Partner Sit-Ups: Sit across from a partner. Both partners sit back and sit up
together. When they come up, they clap hands before sitting back again.
