The JROTC program is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline. The program’s focus is reflected in its mission statement, “To motivate young people to be better citizens.” It prepares cadets for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. The program is not only a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, but provides instruction and rewarding opportunities which will benefit the cadet, the community and the nation.
Cadets wear their service dress uniforms every Wednesday and prepare for a strict inspection of the way they present themselves. The Army Cadet Service Uniform (ACSU) consists of a gray shirt and blue pants. Cadets are also subject to rigorous physical training and a variety of academic studies. Although not the typical learning environment, JROTC helps Harker Heights High School cadets learn morals, hard work, determination, and mental toughness – values that will help them lead successful lives.
To enhance esprit-de-corps and teamwork, cadets are offered the option of joining several special teams. These include male and female color guards, armed and unarmed drill teams, and male and female physical training teams. These teams compete against other high schools both locally and throughout the state of Texas for trophies and awards.
Students will inherit a great challenge by joining the JROTC program. Cadets are expected to perform every task as faithfully and conscientiously as you would expect it from others. Cadets actions in the classroom, on the campus and in the community, particularly when in uniform, will be observed and evaluated by others. Cadets must always set the best possible example and should manage their time so that it is properly applied between study and recreation; the instructor staff is always available to assist.
Welcome to the Corps of Cadets. Prove by your actions that JROTC is where leaders are made. Your morality, loyalty, integrity and sense of responsibility must be above reproach. We encourage you to work hard and take maximum advantage of the many opportunities available through JROTC.
