Although the term "marathon" is used in the name of Amersfoort Marathon, it is not a true marathon, not even in the running category. The longest walking distance is 25 kilometers, which is roughly the length of a half marathon. I participated in this distance during the 2025 walking event. Both the start and the finish are located at Eemplein, a very convenient spot, thanks to the availability of restrooms and supermarkets. Furthermore, Eemplein is situated close to the train station, and several bus lines stop in the immediate vicinity.
The walking event in Amersfoort takes participants through the city of Amersfoort and its surrounding areas. The natural landscape around Amersfoort is beautiful, but due to rainfall, the sections passing through these natural areas were very muddy in 2025. The remainder of the route led through Amersfoort itself, passing through both attractive and less appealing neighborhoods, as well as the city center, before eventually returning to the start and finish point at Eemplein.
Some walking events have an app. The event in Amersfoort featured an app that allowed me to view my official finish time and my pace during the hike. Most hiking events do not have an app, and there is also no time tracking when walking the Pieterpad, the Westerborkpad, or other long-distance trails, unless I set my own watch or use a walking or running app. Time is not important in the hiking sport, but it is handy to know my time and pace sometimes.
