In 2025 I completed the Haarlem City Walk, one of the three KiKa Walks. I hiked the Utrecht City Walk in 2026, and I still plan to take on the Texel Walk. These walks are connected to the NGO KiKa, whose mission is to cure all children with cancer. The KiKa Walks are organized by Le Champion, a foundation whose hiking events I enjoy and I participated in many. They also organize running and cycling events.
The KiKa City Walks are events designed for families as well as for the long-distance hiker. Participants can choose from four routes: the family walk, which is the shortest, and three longer distances. I chose the longest route. All routes pass through the historic center of Haarlem, while the longest one also leads into the green areas surrounding the city. Although I am familiar with Haarlem’s center, I still discovered many streets I had never seen before. The same was true for the outskirts. Since I am not from Haarlem, the most interesting part for me was going through the natural areas around the city, places that are not easily accessible by public transport and often unknown to people who do not live in the region.
