throughout March and April. Organisms were preserved in isopropyl, identified to the lowest possible taxon, photographed, and added to the Grice Cove Collection located in the GML collection room. Entries for each specimen were then added to the Grice Cove Guide. This website provides information on the Collection as well as the Guide. Attached is the project proposal.
Project Purpose:
To create a usable guide identifying invertebrate species for students and visitors to the Grice Marine Lab and Grice Cove Beach. This guide currently focuses on superficial macrofauna and larger organisms that are accessible to Grice Cove explorers and is designed to be easily updated by future collectors.
We aim to provide a snapshot of the Grice Cove community; one that is dominated by a few hardy species that are well-adapted to the harsh intertidal environment.
Methods:
Organisms were collected in March and April from three types of habitats in Grice Cove. Hard substrate dominates the area behind GML on either side of the kayak outlet and is composed of mixed shell and rock. Salt marsh is found along the walkable trail behind Grice and reaches approximately two feet into the pluff mud. Grice Beach is a sandy habitat with mild wave action reaching up to the wrack line.
Specimens were collected at low tide by hand and using dip nets
