Oyster Collections
Oyster samples were obtained from the Charleston Museum for the years 1739-1796 (Beef Market), 1700-1800 (Stono Plantation/Dill Sanctuary), and about 2000 years ago (Stono Plantation/Dill Sanctuary). Years were determined by the Charleston Museum based on pottery dating (Zierden and Reitz 2005; Anthony 2012). For the modern Stono River samples, live oyster clusters were collected from Dill’s Sanctuary (N 32˚42.659 W 79˚59.129 and N 32˚42.829 W 79˚59.378).
Measurements & Calculations
Morphometric measurements were based on Claassen (1998). Handedness was determined and then valve height, anterior scar height, valve length, and valve depth were measured (Claassen Fig. 20). Modern oysters were shucked and tissue removed. Next, shells were bleached for 2 days, rinsed, and dried prior to labeling and measuring. All samples were labeled with an identification number correlating to the Museum information.
Statistical Analysis
A one-way ANOVA factoring for year and Tukey's post-hoc test were performed. Statistics and figures were completed using R Studio. All data presented in the Results section are based on left valves only to prevent pseudoreplication.
