Dune Buggy with Corvair 140Hp + Powerglide Trans
Late 70's - I had the F100 and Yamaha XT500 and was on the lookout for a new toy, mentioned it to my mate Warren and the rest was history. He knew a bloke that had this sexy little unit with a Chev Corvair engine. One look and I was in love despite the fact that the owner had never been able to get it registered and the engine did not run. A few dollars changed hands, I located some carby kits (4 carb 140Hp engine) and pretty soon it was running. Getting it registered was another thing - a few discreet calls to the Brisbane authorities gave me a heads up that it was not going to happen via conventional channels. A bit of creative thinking and we had a 70's work around for the problem - buy a VW, swap the plates to the buggy and we are up and away - $90 later we were on the road. Thank god I did not have an accident during the 3 years I was running around under that regime. The car was not exactly discreet - sand tyres on the back and Dunlop racing tyres on the front, metalflake blue with a flame paint job - 100% cop bait.
The background I was told at the time of purchase was that it was one of two that were imported as used vehicles, but were actually new and that this unit was seized and auctioned to pay duty on the other. It was purchased by a Brisbane dealer at auction and sold to the owner that I bought it from in Cairns. After failing to get it through the registration system.he pensioned it off to his storage shed where I found it.
After a year or two on the road in far north Queensland it was hauled to Tasmania on a temporary return to my home state. I thought it was time to go legitimate and tried registration through the formal channels and hit a brick wall, so sold it into Victoria and my understanding was it was on the road in a few weeks. Victoria was pretty free and easy in the early 80's.I always regretted selling it but at the time family needs prevailed. I have recently discovered (30 years later) that this was the designer/builders last stand - intended for personal use when the family emigrated to Australia.Follow the links for detailed history on the breed. The Swiss Buggy Story
