1984 was the year Chris Williams designer manufacturer of the original Seawind 24 in Australia and Martin Hadley established Seawind Catamarans USA. Chris had sold his business to Richard Ward. The goal was to emulate the success of the Seawind 24 enjoyed in Australia and translate it to the much larger US market. The Seawind 24's endured much better than the partnership which only lasted 12 months. Martin retired Chris's equity in the business and invited me to join him growing the operation.
We had a rocky ride introducing this wonderful craft to the country. If we had waited a few years until Dennis Conner introduced multihulls to the Americas' Cup it would have made the job a lot easier. Upon reflection we met some great people and there were good times along the way. I returned to Australia late 1987 and maintained contact with a few of the owners for some years after, but that has diminished over the years. Easter 2015 was a bit cool and wet in my home state of Tasmania which prompted me and best mate google to have a look around and revisit the past.
Martin and I remain best mates and still enjoy the thrills of speed on the water. I have spent many years sailing in Tasmania, crewing on monohulls harbour racing racing and offshore - but it has never replaced the adrenalin rush of sailing a Seawind 24 at speed on a broad reach running the spinnaker. My most memorable experience was a delivery to from Key West to Cancun in mid 1987. This has inspired me to dig through my archives to find Seawind 24 related info..........Please enjoy.
I have managed to dig out some original documents that owners may find useful
