KBI Biopharma (Accelerating cell culture process, development and manufacturing)
KBI Biopharma is a manufacturing facility based in North Carolina and Boulder, Colorado. Their focus is to develop
technology to accelerate the cell culture process. Indeed, one of the bottlenecks in biopharma is the cell culture process,
which can take several weeks. The system KBI developed is called Ambr15 (it stands from Automated microscale
bioreactor). It is a platform that consists of 24 microbioreactors which can be individually controlled for pH, pressure,
temperature, etc. and can be automated. The presenter mentioned two case studies to illustrate how Ambr15 works. The
Ambr system can be used as a high throughput platform to run diverse processes in biopharma. It accelerates the timeline
of the whole process and consequently reduces costs and labor. KBI claims that they can grow in 1-1.5 months the same
amount of cells that large scale bioreactors can grow in 3-4 months. Currently, they are looking for partners who are
interested in using their platform to accelerate their biopharma processes.
