Making bumpy ground and water
I've been asked by a few people how to add water to a map but thought there's
little point without knowing first how to make a realistic environment to put it in
so here is my quick guide to displacement mapping and water...
So without further ado open your test map in Hammer and raise the player up a bit so he dosn't end up in the ground
and change the light entity for a light_environment for better effect and reflections
Now to buisness
create a new brush from one of the "blend" textures about 96 units high and the width and size to fit in your room
(the first green, grassy looking blend texture is good because it has grass sprites)
Now click on the texture tool on the left (coloured cube) and click on the displacement tab
then move the mouse to the surface of the new brush
and click once to select it then click on the "create" button....accept the default settings of "3" for now and click ok
The surface should now be covered in a series of criss-cross white lines something like the following screenshot
