Compiling and Running Your Map
You now have a map that you can run in Half-Life 2...well almost
You still need to compile the thing before it'll work
To Compile you need to press F9 on your keyboard...this will bring up the following window
I've named mine "test" but you can name it whatever you like
Click on "Save" and you'll be presented with the following window
Click all the boxes that say "normal" and the one that says "Don't run the game after compiling" as this dosn't currently work
though quite honestly even when it's fixed I've no intention of going through the painstaking wait for HL2 to start up every time I feel like testing my map...
This is why I allready have HL2 running minimised in the background
Click on "OK" and your map should compile in a matter of seconds...as your map becomes larger the compile time becomes longer...
Now Change to HL2 either by clicking the program running in the tray or pressing Alt+Tab and
press the ~ key to bring up the console (if you're using a UK keyboard layout it's the ¬ key)
Type map test into the console and hit enter (substitute "test" with your map name if you called it something different)
Your map should load...and there you are running around in your very own Half-Life 2 map
Now you just need to make it bigger and better and more interesting and fun
I hope this has helped someone to be less afraid of the map editor and I apologise in advance for any marriages/relationships this tutorial may end up being responsible for breaking up...
Believe me, mapping can be an addictive and time-consuming hobby
If you have any questions, comments, or feedback about this tutorial I can usualy be found hanging around the Planethalflife Forums going under the name (GIT)r-man
