As the El Paso & Southwestern railroad was being built eastward across New Mexico, the town of Hermanas was built to serve as a water stop and siding, The railroad initially was built from this town northward across a flat valley for 31 miles to the town of Deming, New Mexico for a connection with the Santa Fe Railroad. Once the grade to Deming was completed, construction continued eastward from Hermanas toward El Paso, Texas
