Bowen is located on the northern slopes of Sierra de Cristo Rey Peak. This town was once a water stop for the trains as they climbed over the north side of this peak. Today this location, southeast of Sunland Park, new mexico,  is a dirt parking lot used by visitors as they climb a foot trail to the top of the peak to view a statue of Christ located on the summit. 

A portion of a U.S. Geological Survey map, dated in 1946 shows the location of Bowen and the Bowen Tunnel in the center of the map. The tracks closer to the river are the Southern Pacific tracks. The ones higher up the mountain are the El Paso & Southwestern tracks. The bridge over the Rio Grande river is on the far right side of the
