There are a great many ideas that take more than one paragraph to explain, and so longer forms of writing are required. Among those forms is the essay, a multi-paragraph piece of writing that exists to validate a given central claim or thesis; an essay lays out an idea and tests it, along the way either eliminating it from consideration or supporting it such that its validity is evident to the reader. As with paragraphs, there are several ways in which essays can work; for ENG 099, two short expository essays will be required.
The modes in which the essays will be written appear below, and links to examples of each will continue to appear as they become available. Please note that individual prompts will vary depending on the section and semester; submissions which do not address the prompt offered in class will not be acceptable.
