The Department of English reports that ENGL 1213: Composition II
focuses on developing students' ability to find and use source materials in asking questions, presenting information, and writing with a thesis. The reading materials in the text are cross-disciplinary and require that students learn how to read them, how to abstract or summarize them, how to ask questions about them, and how to use them in building ideas of their own. Besides the research element and major papers, there are many short informal homework and class activities that can address these tasks.
That is to say that the course focuses on developing students' ability to develop arguments from a synthesis of materials.
