NEWMAN, Peter. " It used to be that methane was seen to be six times worse"

Peter Newman (Distinguished Professor at Curtin University, WA, Australia) (2021): “I was very surprised because UNEP reports are often packaging up material that you've seen elsewhere, but there is a lot of new stuff in this and it was really surprising and quite revealing to someone who is working in IPCC and feels as though you are over these things, but, you know, it used to be that methane was seen to be six times worse than CO2, then it went to 20-odd and then 35, it's up to 120 times now, and they've brought that out and showed the science behind that, and it made sense. And then you could see how they moved into seeing what are the benefits of getting rid of methane in the house and in businesses. Extraordinary numbers of people who get asthma because of heating or cooking in households, large numbers of children. Thousands and thousands of hospital admissions saved if you got rid of this. So it looked at jobs and money and sheer misery of the asthma attacks and so on that could easily make a case for getting rid of methane, just as much as the climate change ones would. And I thought that was beautifully done” (quoted in Robyn Williams, presenter, “Natural gas not a clean option”, ABC RN, The Science Show, 29 May 2021: https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/scienceshow/natural-gas-not-a-clean-option/13363654 ).
