I would like to thank Sylvia and Brian Knights for kindly sharing the wonderful photo albums featured below. Their contribution helps us preserve and celebrate the rich history of our village, and we’re truly grateful for their generosity.
If you have any old photographs, stories, or memories of the village that you’d be happy to share, we’d love to hear from you! Whether it's a snapshot from years gone by or a treasured family moment, every piece helps us build a more complete picture of our community’s past.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch — your memories could be a valuable part of our village’s story.

Sponsord Run 1978
THE LAMENT OF A WIDDINGTON RUNNER by Peter Vernon
Now Widdington really is quite an odd place,
For here a small bet can start off a race,
So that's why we all shiver, out in the cold,
And the people to blame, Messrs. Billings and Gold.
They took on a wager, as to whom was most fit,
So were running down Springhill, and back past the Pit,
To raise lots of money, for our new Village Hall,
With great help from sponsers, competitors, and all.
Hob looks official, with glasses and pen,
He collects all our forms, and gives us the gen,
Whilst saying, if younger, how he would have run
The course in ten minutes, and found it great fun!
Valerie, our starter, makes a move to the line,
For it says on her watch that it nearly is time,
To set us all going, off round the block,
And the main thing to beat, we are told, is the clock.
Off we all thunder, down past the green,
The funniest sight, this village has seen;
Then off down Springhill, at a fair pace we go
But on reaching the bridge, most are starting to slow.
Stan's at the milepost, with a smile on his face,
It's alright for him, he's not in the race,
So that's one mile completed, but two still to run,
I thought someone said this was meant to be fun!
Dave Billings now falls behind Anthony Gold,
But everyone told him he's getting too old,
Though he looks quite a lad, in shorts made by Mary
With knobbly knees, and legs very hairy
Peter Savage, on bike, is still just in the lead,
Giving us the protection from traffic we need,
Though some people shelter behind Micks great girth,
For the cars seem to be giving him quite a wide berth.
Off the main road, and then downhill we coast,
Hooray, we have made it, the second mile post,
That's two miles behind us, but over one more to run,
I'm sure someone said this was meant to be fun!
Now under the bridge, Hollow road looms ahead,
And we're glad Derek follows to pick up the dead,
For really this is, just too much for many,
And as for my strength, I don't feel I have any.
Onward we struggle, on up the hill.
Over the top, and we're going on still,
For there's only one thing, that we greatly fear,
And that's, if we're late, we might miss our beer.
At mile number three we are greeted by Jack,
Who marks down the time, with a cool i now lack,
Three miles we've toiled, and still more to run,
Where is that someone, who said this was fun?
On round the next corner, the finish in sight,
We pound our poor feet with all of our might,
That is except Sue, though it's very unkind,
She's been told more than once, that she's 'all behind'.
Now that it's all over, I shall tell everyone,
With a little more practice I might even have won;
I'm stiff and I ache, but I don't really care,
It was fun after all, and I'll win it next year!
BETCHA!
The poem refers to a challenge in the Fleur made one evening. He was a live wire and Bon Viver. The race from/to the Fleur took place on 14th Jan 1979 and consisted of the 3 mile + loop down Springhill to the main road and back up Hollow Road.
I have still got a list of the participants and was won by Les Peck ( son of Carol Archer) in 23 minutes! We sent the ladies/ girls off with a 5 minute start and had fun chasing down.
This produced £150 towards the new wing of the hut. Today the front part of the new hall which was built by voluntary village labour ( some photos are held) overseen by Bob Galtress and Keith Beevis.
This was followed up with a further fund raiser. A wheelbarrow race on 30th July’79 from the Fleur round the Green and back. Lots of hilarity and upsets but no record of funds or winners.
Regards.
