Little Totston is an interactive model railway designed for children to use and adults to enjoy. It has appeared at many of the local model railway exhibitions in the southeast. It was built initally as a simple "Have a go" layout by members of the Orpington and District Model Railway Society but now has many animated and interactive features to increase its appeal. These are mostly controlled by Arduino microcontrollers connected to servos. Working features include a visitor operated crane, a moving Dalek, a house on fire together with a fire engine with flashing lights, a bunny that pops its head out of the burrow, a man drilling the road, a car transported delivering a car, a working tipper truck, a helicopter with roating blades, a windmill with rotating sails and a garage car lift.
This layout has been on the circuit for a number of years and is beginning to show its age. We are therefore embarking on a building a replacement which will additionally feature a tramway, moving road vehicles, boats and bicycles!
This is Little Totston 2 under construction. We now have 3 circulating tracks and a shuttle tramway running above. The belts and pulleys shown on the left of the layout will hold magnets that guide the road vehicles around the town square. The area on the right will become a quarry and dock area.
