This story was written back in 2013 for the gamemode prior to it's fallout conversion, and it's really bad, cringey and was really never finished. For the current story, check here.
Consideration, Planning, conservation… Concepts that humanity, as a whole, has always had difficulty grasping. This simple truth was made apparent in 2045, when humanity had exhausted so many of its natural resources that it could no longer support itself. No one ever thought about what would happen if we ran out of energy, food, fuel, things man had taken for granted for so long; staples of the first world life. In 2045, man could not sustain his new technologies. Fuel was rare and expensive, international economies were falling apart, and many cities seceded from their country, eventually dissolving in to warring city-states, but this is just the beginning of the story of man’s self-destruction.
While the world was locked in these modern dark ages, something changed. Humanity collectively turned their attention towards a new threat; The earth itself is a tiny insignificant rock hurtling through space, and it’s far from alone in the universe. It became apparent that a large cloud of asteroids began drifting through earth’s orbital path around the sun. It was thought that it would be the end of humanity, but further research revealed that the actual rocks drifting through space were very small, and most of them would simply burn up in the atmosphere. As every year the planet intercepted the cloud of rocks, many of them still fell to the surface. While some meteorites were fairly large, none were big enough to cause significant damage to the planet or the ecosystem itself, let alone the planet’s inhabitants.
Instead of being a destructive force, the cloud of space debris proved to be just what humanity needed. After the threat of the total annihilation of the entire planet, once warring city-states had begun cooperating again. When some of the meteorites that landed every year were recovered and studied, something new was discovered.
The scientist of that time discovered several new elements, but out of all of them one was particularly astounding. It was a material that could be applied to any other material, allowing it to be easily malleable without being hot, as well as doubling as a powerful adhesive, allowing anyone to build complex objects out of pieces of scrap. It also was able to react to various other chemicals, producing huge volumes of energy. The discovery of the chemical element marked the dawn of a new era. It could easily be used anywhere and due to yearly meteorite showers, it was always in high supply. Using this new technology humanity was able to crawl out of the pit of chaos, thus dawning a new golden age. This resource was appropriately named savium.
Sprawling, colossal cities whose buildings extended high in to the clouds were constructed, the economy thrived daily; peace was enjoyed in all corners of the world. The idea of the third world was absolved, everyone had an equal chance in the world and no one could ever fail in life. There was never a need for crime, so crime was low and governments could easily keep their people happy and economically powerful without having to restrict their freedoms.
Humanity however did not learn from their past mistakes. New technologies that utilized vast amounts of this resource were developed in mass, and people again took this precious resource for granted.
By the year 2380 the world was only split into three governmental powers; The American Republic, the Eurasian Coalition, and the African Conglomerate all worked together to maintain the peace and actively participated in trade. There was no tension between these nations, and they all shared equal technological prowess.
Unfortunately, Humanity was unable to learn from its mistakes. Man continually exploited their new resource; creating technologies that absorb mass amounts of Savium, ignoring anything could limit the consumption of the resource, treating it as an infinite asset, never once considering what would happen if the resource were to be depleted. The entire culture and society depended on the continuous consumption of savium.
On the year of 2399, the meteorites did not fall for the first time in two centuries and for an economic system solely reliant on the gathering of a yearly supply of savium this was a huge hit. With the suddenly limited supply of one of the most fundamental and important resources ever known to man, the only thing that could ensue was chaos.
A lot had changed by 2399, and since Africa as a continent was where most of the savium landed, Africa had gone through one of the biggest changes out of all other regions of the world. Land once barren was turned into sprawling metropolitan cities, the economy thrived and after the entire continent united into the African Conglomerate, it was one of the largest super powers in recorded history. When the savium became limited, the conglomerate immediately cut off their trade with the other nations, refusing to give comment as to why. Over the next few years the supply of savium grew scarcer at an alarming rate, becoming more and more expensive – especially considering the trade cutoff with Africa.
On 2405, tensions were high between the Conglomerate and the other nations. The lack of trade led to minor skirmishes and even isolated cases of full on conflict, and within the year the Conglomerate struck, for in order to preserve their nation they thought it necessary to destroy the other two, thus began the ironically named Savium War. Due to Africa’s advantage in resources, they were able to easily take on the other two nations, quickly seizing control of land from the other nations.
One of the most effective strategies the Conglomerate used was one that could decimate populations of areas by shelling urban locations with canisters, however it was not the canister that did the damage. The conglomerate took pride in their biological engineering, and they were able to create their own organisms specialized for specific tasks. One of these creations was a small creature that latched on to the victim’s head, mutating them and ultimately rendering them a puppet for the creature to control. These creatures were generally referred to as headcrabs due to their similarity to monsters called headcrabs in ancient forms of entertainment.
When urban areas shelled with headcrab canisters, it converted its inhabitants into a deadly horde, and thanks to a pheromone conglomerate soldiers have embedded into their armor, they were not attacked by the zombies. Using this tactic, the conglomerate were able to be victorious in most of the battles that took place, putting the other nations in great risk. Because of their limited options, the slowly losing nations turned to their last resort.
On November Second, 2408, the conglomerate capital city of New Lagos was turned into ashes by a weapon constructed as a joint project by the dwindling nations, Thor. Thor was a massive orbital laser cannon utilizing the destructive energy found by combining atomic fission with savium. As it turns out, splitting one of the atoms contained in the element released more energy than had ever been seen before. With this discovery in hand, Thor was constructed. Thor was able to discharge the energy into a focused beam of energy, and when that beam of energy struck New Lagos, it carried a destructive yield never seen before. The entire city and the surrounding area was reduced to radioactive mush in seconds.
With the capital destroyed, their most important authority figures dead and grief stricken by the loss, the remaining leaders of the Conglomerate decided to strike back. They did not have Orbital Beam Cannons, but they had plenty of nukes and headcrab canisters. No more than a few minutes after the destruction of their capital the Conglomerate immediately retaliated. The other nations fighting the Conglomerate expected them to use warheads, and accounted for it with counteractive missiles and Energy weapon powered Anti-Air, however the amount of nukes that the conglomerate had were greatly underestimated. The Conglomerate launched all they could and managed to slip most of them by the defenses of the other nations, decimating the land. They were followed by a barrage of millions of long range headcrab canisters. These canisters landed everywhere - People who weren't already incinerated by the nuclear blasts were turned in to zombies by the parasites.
In retaliation, Thor bombarded the surface of Africa, wiping out cities and destroying the land. It was at this moment that the world ended. The smoke from the nuclear fire blocked the sun’s rays for 50 years, locking the planet in an endless nuclear winter, and even when the skies began to clear the surface was still laden with harmful radiation and was completely uninhabitable.
It wasn’t until 2511 when the air became breathable again, of course there will still be
radioactive storms every now and then, but it was at this time that the people who hid in bunkers, lived in underground metro systems, sewers and other places where they could take shelter from the nuclear holocaust began emerging into the broken world. This is the world you live in, and this will be the world you die in. Welcome to the wasteland.
