We have a set training curriculum that streamlines our dog and handler skills. We practice all parts of this curriculum to the skill level the dog and handler duo are training at every week to build those skills.
Our main curriculum is as follows.
This is a vital skill, that dogs not only return to their handler, but do so with enthusiasm and pace.
Recall skills start at a foundation level with some resources found in our Pre-Flyball Skills page.
We then incorporate restrained recalls and over-jump recalls. This builds our dogs skills to be able to complete the jumps aspect of the flyball course.
Boxturns are the hardest skill to master, but the most important to train.
We aim for a safe, four-pawed boxturn that protects our dog's joints from injury.
This starts from a flat-ground turn, slowly building up to a turn on an angled board.
The ball is then added to the skill.
Flyball is a high-impact sport, so we need to protect our dog's bodies by building muscle mass and ability.
Our conditioning equipment and exercises are self-directed and assisted by an instructor.
We also recommend competition-level dogs to be seen by a canine body professional to maintain their dogs.
We work to master all of these componants seperately before backchaining the recall and boxwork sections together to form a full run. After full runs are mastered, we work toward building distraction in the environment and crossing with other dogs. All dogs are individual learners and we treat them accordingly.
