Now that the weather has warmed up and we're all wanting to be outside more often our pets usually tag along, being our companions as we do stuff about our yards, taking care our cars, etc. There are so many things that can harm our pets like other animals, passing cars, insects and poisons.
Last night Dr. Cort Mohr and I (Amy Strauch, LVT) were here late taking care of Boofis, a golden doodle. His owner came home from work to find the dog had vomited and was having muscle tremors. During his exam we also noticed his pupils were dilated. All were signs this dog had gotten into some sort of poison. We asked his owner what he might have gotten into. Their son had sprayed with a herbicide 2 days prior and her husband takes pain medications. She also went and walked through the garage to see if anything had a leak and through the yard to check for any chewed on plants. Good News! After being medicated and spending a night in the hospital, he's gone home and is back to his normal self. Not all cases of poisoning have such a wonderful outcome. Some cases require round the clock care. Some poisons have no antidote. Some poisons there is no recovering from.
Below are some PDF's that contain what poisons are and what they do to our pets, toxin proofing your home and what to do if your pet is poisoned.
