Professor Michael Brookes OBE is a Consultant Chartered and Registered Forensic Psychologist and Visiting Professor in the School of Social Sciences, Birmingham City University. From 2003 – 2014 he was the Director of Therapeutic Communities at HMP Grendon having been initially appointed in 2002 to undertake a review of Grendon’s therapeutic regime. Michael started working in secure settings in 1979 as a groupworker at Glenthorne Youth Treatment Centre in Birmingham before joining the Prison Service at HMP Gartree in 1985. From this base he also provided a psychological service to HMPs Ashwell, Leicester and Stocken. He next transferred to the East Midlands Area in 1991 where he was involved in creating the first area psychology team. He also managed directly the psychology teams at HMPs Lincoln and Lindholme. When Michael moved to Prison Service headquarters in 1997 he took up post as the Head of the Psychology Liaison Unit, HR Planning and HR Strategy. Michael was appointed an OBE in the 2013 New Year’s Honours for services to HM Prison Service and the care of prisoners.
