HMP Grendon: context and regime.
Professor Michael Brookes OBE,Birmingham City University
Abstract
This paper will explain the context in which Grendon operates offering both a historical perspective and an explanation of Grendon’s current position as part of the joint DH/MoJ (NOMS) strategy for working with personality disordered offenders. Described also will be the establishment’s therapeutic community regime where psychologically informed treatment is the central and pivotal activity. This is supported by opportunities for Grendon’s residents to engage in education, work and arts based events. It is this all-encompassing aspect of therapy which contributes to Grendon’s success and the opportunity it provides for offenders who have committed serious sexual and/or violent offences, to change their lives.
