Franklin Lady Rebels defeat Ravenwood 2-1 Monday
The Franklin High School Lady Rebels soccer team claimed its 10th victory Monday night with a 2-1 defeat of Ravenwood. The Lady Raptors score first with a header by Christi Padgett on a corner kick with 22.18 minutes left in the first period. Morgan Adams tied the score for the Lady Rebels with 8.24 minutes remaining in the first half which ended in a 1 to 1 tie.
Mid-way through the second period Franklin’s Chessney White kicked the winning goal which ended scoring at the “home” game for Franklin which was moved to Ravenwood when the lights at the Franklin’s soccer failed shortly before the 7 pm scheduled make up game was to begin. With only one emergency-type floodlight burning at the Franklin soccer complex, the game was suddenly moved to Ravenwood with both teams using the Ravenwood bus to travel to the “visitors” soccer field. The start of the game was only delayed 40 minutes by the site transfer.
The originally scheduled game for Sept. 17 was postponed because of rain.
Many great athletes have passed through Franklin High School. They left their mark in a variety of ways - setting records, breaking them, and being role models for their peers. Some have been fortunate enough to have their accomplishments posted in the hall of the fame next to the auxiliary gym. Some even have their jersey number retired and framed across from the main gym.
Here's a brief look at some of those Rebels greats:
Jennifer and Jenger Burchett: Girls Soccer (1989-1992)
These sisters brought Franklin girls soccer to a new level when they arrived. With Jenger leading the high-octane offense and Jennifer anchoring the brick-wall defense, Franklin went 75-3-2 while these sisters played. Jenger had 121 career goals, 52 assists and a notable 44 goals in one season. Jennifer led the defense to allow only .2 goals per game in her career. Together, the sisters worked hard to become All-region, Midstate, County, and All-American players. Not only did they earn these awards, but they helped Franklin become a four-time state championship team. After graduating from Franklin, both sisters went on to play at Vanderbilt University.
These are just a few of the many great athletes Franklin High School has produced. Take a look around the auxiliary and main gym areas and hopefully you will become inspired by their accomplishments and work hard to achieve your own goals. Look for more profiles of great FHS athletes in upcoming editions of the Rebel Review.

Franklin girls hand Brentwood first loss in region soccer
by JAE S. LEE
-- BRENTWOOD REGION 6 CHAMPIONSHIP
Franklin picked up a little revenge as well a home game for the girls soccer sectionals with a 2-1 win Thursday night over district and county rival Brentwood.
It was the first victory for the Lady Rebels (15-3) in three matchups this season with Brentwood and gave them the Region 6-AAA title, setting up a Saturday meeting with Hendersonville for a berth in next week's Class AAA tournament.
"We knew we couldn't let them beat us again," said sophomore Chesney White, who scored the eventual winning goal midway through the opening half. "They're our biggest rival. It felt good to put them away."
Brentwood (16-1-1) took an early lead on a Grace Boto goal 13 minutes into the match.
Franklin quickly rallied as Morgan Zigelsky scored a couple of minutes later off a Lady Rebel miss, before White headed in a pass from Hannah Rothrock for the lead.
"We got the first goal again, but they responded more vigorously than they did the first two games," Brentwood Coach Mike Purcell said.
"They got the equalizer off the rebound, then they got a nice cross (pass) and we just sat and watched. But we had our chances, late in the first half and two or three times in the second half."
Brentwood will travel to Station Camp for a Saturday sectional.
"They played well," Brentwood goalie Savannah Shipman said. "Both the goals came on defensive mistakes, but they capitalized like they should have. They were on top of every ball."
Brentwood defeated Franklin 4-0 during the regular season and 1-0 in last week's District 11-AAA championship. The Lady Rebels' other loss was a 2-1 decision against visiting Hendersonville.
"This is big for momentum if nothing else," Franklin Coach Jimmy Burchett said. "We felt we'd played with them, we knew we could play with them. We just needed a break or two. We played probably our best game of the year. I'm glad it came at this point.
"Not having to travel (Saturday) is a big advantage for us."
Station Camp 3, Hendersonville 0: Abby Gettings, Amber Ortiz and Sykia Perry scored as Station Camp won the Region 5-AAA title.

Bruins turn over Regional soccer title to Rebels
Brentwood Home Page news reports
In what was billed to be one of the top games in the state the Region 6 AAA Women’s Soccer Finals between Brentwood and Franklin did not disappoint. The game was played at BHS under the lights and had all of the intensity of the state finals. With the title on the line and the opportunity to play at home on Saturday, the players opened the game with the tension expected.
In the first 20 minutes play was back and forth. Brentwood had an early opportunity to take the lead when an Audrey Howard chip shot was stopped just short of the goal by a recovering Lady Rebel defender. However, in the 24th minute, Howard turned the corner and drove the end line and made a rocketing cross to Grace Boto who was in front of the goal and redirected the ball into the back of the net.
The Lady Bruins took the lead with 26 minutes to go in the first half. Not to be outdone, the Lady Rebels came storming back and within a minute of the Lady Bruin goal a cross from Lady Rebel forward Chesney White was headed into the knotting the score 1 – 1.
Again the Lady Rebels made a push and at the 23 minute mark, Morgan Zigelsky, the center mid-fielder for the Lady Rebels found the back of the net on a put back in front of the net. The Lady Rebels took the lead 2 – 1.
The second half saw the Lady Bruins come close with several plays in front of the net; however, all were denied or errant in the attempts. The game was played with a late second half push by the Lady Rebels resulting in outstanding goal save by Savannah Shippman. The Lady Bruins, with their own push were denied the back of the net with strong defensive play.

Collierville can't catch Lady Rebels at state soccer tournament
by Gene Henley
CHATTANOOGA -- This time, the missed opportunities cost Collierville.
The Lady Dragons failed to capitalize on some key first-half chances in their Class AAA quarterfinal matchup against Franklin, who took advantage of their chances en route to a 3-0 victory at Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga.
Franklin (17-3) advances to today's state semifinal round, where it will face Oak Ridge (19-4-1), a 2-0 winner over defending state champion Murfreesboro Siegel.
In their fifth consecutive state tournament appearance, the Lady Dragons found themselves down 1-0 after a goal by Hannah Rothrock nine minutes in but had a plethora of opportunities in the first half. Robyn Wade sent a lead pass to Taylor Smith, whose chip shot attempt was blocked by Lady Rebels keeper Taylor Mangrum. Later, Avery Martin had the ball in the box but couldn't get a clean touch and Mangrum made another key save.
Smith had another attempt off a ricochet that she sent left of the goal.
In the second half, Smith was fouled in the box, but Mangrum made a diving save of an Alexis Pugh penalty kick.
"It's been unfortunate that things have gone that way for the last half of the year," Collierville coach Bill Gillespie said. "The weather hampered us from getting a consistent series of practices and games, and the girls haven't been as sharp as they need to be."
Six minutes into the second period, Caroline Hiskey scored off a free kick after a foul. Then, with Collierville playing a four-forward lineup, Chesney White scored off a feed from Morgan Adams.
"We took the risk of putting more pressure on them and, at times, we countered well," Gillespie said. "The third goal was the third goal -- it was in the last 10 minutes and we're trying to put goals in by pushing up.
"I think the score looks worse than it actually was -- I don't know if it was a 3-0 game -- but unfortunately we're on the wrong end of it. It's frustrating watching the girls put the effort they put out, and not see anything from it."

Franklin Lone area AAA team to win State QuarterFinal
by Tom Kreager
-- CHATTANOOGA --
Franklin did the one thing no other Middle Tennessee team could do in the Class AAA girls soccer state tournament Wednesday.
The Lady Rebels won their quarterfinal.
Franklin defeated Collierville 3-0 at Girls Prep to become the lone Midstate team to reach the Class AAA semifinals. Brentwood, Riverdale and defending champion Siegel lost.
“We’re just going to try and represent Middle Tennessee as best we can,” Franklin senior Caroline Hiskey said.
“I was afraid to come over here to be honest, the way it was going,” Franklin Coach Jimmy Burchett said. “It could have helped us because it gave us a wake-up call. I think everyone realized that it could happen to anybody.”
Franklin’s Hannah Rothrock scored in the ninth minute to give the Lady Rebels a quick 1-0 lead. Hiskey added another goal in the fifth minute of the second half before Chesney White rounded out the scoring.
“It was important to come out with intensity,” Hiskey said. “We had to come and show them how we were going to play right away.”
Franklin goalkeeper Taylor Mangrum needed to save just one shot on goal against Collierville.

Franklin Blanks Collierville
by Gene Henley
The Franklin soccer team seems to be putting it together at the right time.
The fourth-ranked Lady Rebels dominated possession and got goals from three different players in a 3-0 victory over Collierville on Wednesday, advancing to face third-ranked Oak Ridge today.
"I think we played excellent," Franklin coach Jimmy Burchett said. "We're really at the top of our game now and are peaking at the right time. We've been playing 80-minute games over the past few weeks and not having lulls like we had during the season; every position was playing hard and there were no holes on defense. The defenders organized well and Taylor Mangrum came up huge.
"I think we're confident in what we're doing and it shows on the field."
Hannah Rothrock put the Lady Rebels (17-3) up 1-0 with a goal nine minutes in. Caroline Hiskey added a goal on a free kick in the second half, then Morgan Key drove the left sideline and found a cutting Chesney White for the final score of the evening.
Collierville ends its' season 11-5-3.
* Oak Ridge 2, Siegel 0: The third-ranked Lady Wildcats controlled the defending Class AAA state champions, out-shooting the Lady Stars 22-1 and getting second-half goals from Jennifer Lee and Kaelyn Angelo.
* Houston 4, Riverdale 3: Houston, ranked 25th nationally, slid by the Lady Warriors on Olivia Harrison's second goal with seven minutes to play.
* Dobyns-Bennett 3, Brentwood 3 (Dobyns-Bennett 5-3 PKs): The Lady Indians squandered a second-half lead and a lead in overtime before going 5-for-5 on penalty kicks. Katie Clark had two goals in regulation and the game-winning penalty shot.

Franklin makes AAA Girls Soccer Final
-- CHATTANOOGA --
With more girls soccer state championships than any other school in Tennessee, Franklin put itself in position to win yet another by edging Oak Ridge 2-1 in Thursday’s Class AAA semifinals.
The Lady Rebels (19-3), who have 10 titles, will face Houston, a 1-0 winner over Dobyns-Bennett, in Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. title game at Girls Prep. “Our seven seniors have been here four times now, and I think they just refused to lose,” veteran Franklin Coach
Jimmy Burchett said after his team rallied from an early deficit with a pair of Morgan Zigelsky goals and relied on its defense down the stretch. “This was one of those games when you’re just glad it’s over and you’re able to move on.”
After giving up a goal midway through the opening half, the Lady Rebels got a penalty-kick goal from Zigelsky that glanced off a diving Oak Ridge goalkeeper Margo Quinn at the 12-minute mark. “That was just a refresher, to know we were back in the game,” Zigelsky said. “I think we came back after that even harder than we started.” Zigelsky struck again two minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Anna Grigg and putting it past Quinn for the lead. From there, goalie Taylor Mangrum posted five second-half saves to anchor the Franklin defensive effort.
“We’ve got a strong offense and a strong defense,” Zigelsky said. “We utilized our offense to get the lead and we utilized our defense to keep it. We played with heart the whole way through.” Franklin missed an opportunity to pad its lead when Lyndie Donegan’s header bounced off the right upright with 15 minutes remaining. “They defended our midfield well, and we didn’t play very smart,” Burchett said.
From 1986-93, Franklin won seven of eight state crowns — including five straight from 1989 on — and added three more in 2000, 2002 and ‘03. Saturday marks the team’s first championship game appearance in six years. “We’ve made the semifinals (last year), but we hadn’t been to the finals,” Zigelsky said. “We came to win it.”

Franklin spells End of the Line for Oak Ridge in State AAA Semi-Finals
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. —
The brilliant run by coach O.J. Sheppard and the Oak Ridge High School girls' soccer team came to a halt Thursday evening, losing to Franklin in the TSSAA state semifinals, 2-1.
Oak Ridge came on strong in the latter part of the season, claiming a district and region championship. The Lady 'Cats rolled in the sectionals, making their way to the state tournament -- the seventh for Sheppard and Oak Ridge this decade.
And then, Oak Ridge got it going and won in the first round, knocking off Siegel, but the run came to an end with the loss to Franklin, which advances to the state title game on Saturday against Houston.
Houston knocked off another east Tennessee, edging Dobyns-Bennett, 1-0.
More on the state tournament run, including photos, will appear in Monday's print edition of The Oak Ridger.

Franklin Blocks Oak Ridge
by Mike Blackerby
-- CHATTANOOGA -- For the third time since 2002 and the second year in a row, Oak Ridge High School ran into the all-too-familiar Franklin roadblock at the state soccer tournament Thursday night.
The Lady Wildcats saw their season come to an end with a tough-to-take 2-1 loss to the Lady Rebels in the Class AAA semifinals at Girls Preparatory School. Oak Ridge saw its 14-game winning streak end and finished 19-5-1. Franklin (18-3) advances to Saturday's championship game against Houston, which edged Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett 1-0 on a goal in the 80th minute.
"I want to win more than anybody, but there's not a darn thing we've got to be embarrassed about," said emotional Oak Ridge coach O.J. Sheppard. "I'm elated. That's something you won't hear many coaches say when you lose like that. I can't describe how hard our team played. I thought we dominated the game."
Franklin coach Jimmy Burchett suggested his team was fortunate to advance. "They just really dominated our midfield," said Burchett. "We hung in there by the skin of our teeth. We're just glad to survive and move on." Oak Ridge was the aggressor early and the Lady Wildcats jumped on top in the 21st minute on an unassisted goal by Jennifer Lee.
One of only three seniors in Oak Ridge's starting lineup, Lee gathered in a carom off a teammate and punched her shot past Franklin goalie Taylor Mangrum from 13 yards out. The tide turned eight minutes later when Lady Rebels midfielder Morgan Zigelsky converted a penalty kick against Oak Ridge keeper Margo Quinn. "That got us in the game, no doubt," said Burchett. Zigelsky struck again just two minutes into the second half for what turned out to the game winner. She took a short chip assist from Anna Grigg and lined it inside the right post past a diving Quinn.
Oak Ridge's best look the rest of the way came in the 58th minute. After a handball infraction by Franklin, Lee's hard shot from straight on was just tipped over the crossbar by Mangrum. The Lady Wildcats had nine shots to Franklin's six. Despite the loss, Sheppard said it was another great season for Oak Ridge, which made its seventh state tournament appearance in the last eight years. "I hate it, but I'm proud of the effort. If we can finish the season playing this hard, Oak Ridge can be proud of these kids.
I think the team (Franklin) that won today will win the state championship." Even though the Lady Wildcats finished just short once again in their bid for a state championship, Sheppard said it's coming. "We're young and we'll be back."

Sheppard lauds Lady Wildcats for strong soccer season
by Mike Blackerby
--CHATTANOOGA --
From the vantage point of Oak Ridge High School soccer coach O.J. Sheppard, the finality of defeat couldn’t obscure the accomplishments of his Lady Wildcats at the state Class AAA soccer tournament.
Oak Ridge saw its 14-game winning streak -- and season -- come to a close last Thursday at Girls Preparatory School with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Franklin in the AAA semifinals.
For the Lady Wildcats (19-5-1), it was a seventh trip to the state tournament in eight years and another season that came up just shy of grabbing the gold soccer ball.
"I’m proud of the effort," said Sheppard, whose Ridgers rebounded from a 5-4-1 start to finish strong.
"A lot of people didn’t think we could do it two months ago. I want to win more than anybody, but there’s not a darn thing we’ve got to be embarrassed about."
The Lady Rebels -- who went on to lose 3-2 to Germantown Houston in Saturday’s championship game -- knocked Oak Ridge out of the state tourney for the third time since 2002.
"I’m elated. That’s something you won’t hear many coaches say when you lose like that. I can’t describe how hard our team played. I thought we dominated the game."
Franklin coach Jimmy Burchett said his team was fortunate to advance.
"They just really dominated our midfield -- we hung in there by the skin of our teeth," said Burchett.
Oak Ridge was the aggressor early and the Lady Wildcats went in front in the 21st minute on an unassisted goal by Jennifer Lee, who gathered in a carom off a Lady Wildcat and punched her shot past Franklin goalie Taylor Mangrum from 13 yards out.
Burchett said his team’s experience might have saved the day for the Lady Rebels.
"One of the things you have to look at is we have seven seniors who have been here four times -- and they refused to lose."
Despite the semifinal loss, Sheppard said it was another great season for Oak Ridge.
"I hate it, but I’m proud of the effort. If we can finish the season playing this hard, Oak Ridge can be proud of these kids."
The future looks bright for the Lady Wildcats, who lose only three seniors starters -- Lee, Greta Jochmann and Alexis Franco.
"We’re young and we’ll be back."

Franklin falls in State Soccer Final
--CHATTANOOGA --
Franklin went ahead with 12 minutes left but could not keep the lead as Houston rallied for a 3-2 win in the Class AAA girls soccer championship Saturday.
The Lady Rebels (19-4) have 10 state titles and were making their first championship game appearance since 2003. They scored a pair of goals in less than three minutes to take a 2-1 lead, but gave up the tying score a minute later and allowed the winner by Olivia Harrison with six minutes remaining.
"I felt our spirits were uplifted and we were going to win the game," said Franklin goalkeeper Taylor Mangrum, one of the team’s seven seniors. "We felt they’d get their heads down, but they didn’t."
It was the fourth consecutive state tournament for Mangrum and her classmates, who lost in the quarterfinals as freshmen and sophomores before last year’s elimination in the semifinals.
"There were a lot of expectations with this team," senior Anna Grigg said.
Houston (19-1-2) scored 24 minutes into the game on a Hillary Dreyfus kick.
"We acted like we were scared to death in the first half," Franklin Coach Jimmy Burchett said. "We were much more aggressive in the second half, put the pressure on them and got rejuvenated when we scored. We fought hard, but we didn’t play as smart as we usually play. We made some critical mistakes, and they played well enough to take advantage."
Mackenzie Moore headed in a Morgan Zigelsky corner kick with 15 minutes left to tie the game, and Grigg’s corner kick led to a Chesney White goal that gave Franklin the lead.
"After we scored, we had a lapse and they got back up," Grigg said. "We were a little panicky early. We sort of underestimated ourselves at the beginning. At halftime, we talked about wanting to come out and play Franklin soccer in the second half. It just didn’t work out."
Houston got inside the Franklin defense twice down the stretch, as Katie Toler and Harrison put shots past Mangrum.
"They picked themselves up off the floor and came back at us," Burchett said. "We weren’t ready for the onslaught, I guess."

Even always-intense Houston girls' soccer coach David Wolff wasn't prepared for all the highs and lows he and his players experienced Saturday afternoon in the Class AAA state championship match.
In the end, it was all worthwhile for Wolff and his Lady Mustangs.
After taking an early lead against Franklin and then losing it, they emerged from a flurry of three goals in less than four minutes with hopes of Houston's fourth girls' soccer title still intact. And 5 minutes and 35 seconds after Lady Mustangs' sophomore Olivia Harrison scored the final goal of the match at Girls' Preparatory School, Wolff dropped to his knees while his players rushed onto the field to celebrate a 3-2 victory.
"That was an unbelievable game," Wolff said after collecting the sixth championship plaque of his career. "I wish it didn't have to be as intense as it was, but that was two good teams fighting, giving it all they had."
Houston had several dangerous balls cleared by Franklin in the first 20 minutes before Hillary Dreyfus finished a cross from Harrison in the 24th for a 1-0 Lady Mustangs' lead.
At halftime, Wolff urged his players not to let up, but for a 20-minute span of the second half, the Lady Rebels controlled most of the play. Their pressure paid off when Mackenzie Moore headed in the equalizer off a Morgan Zigelsky corner kick with 15:05 left to play.
Less than three minutes later, Franklin took a 2-1 lead when Chesney White's shot hit the left post and bounced inside the goal.
"We were working really hard, but they had us for a while," tournament Most Valuable Player Harrison said. "But we're a team that likes to finish. ... We all stepped up."
A little more than 30 seconds after falling behind, Houston (19-1-2) marched back down the field to earn a corner, which Tisha Blankenship placed perfectly in front of Katie Toler. When Toler finished it, the goal tipped the momentum back in the Lady Mustangs' favor, and with 5:35 on the clock, Blankenship sent another ball into the box.
Harrison took a shot that deflected off the Franklin keeper, but she followed it past the Lady Rebel defenders, who came up short in their attempt to chase the ball down before she scored the winning goal.
"Our girls have been coming back all year," Wolff said. "We did it three times this week. I couldn't be prouder of a group of girls, and it wasn't just one person. I can't even tell you how many people contributed to this."

Franklin's Grigg injured, insulted by finals loss
by Maurice Patton
Anna Grigg had plenty of pain, but little gain following Franklin's 3-2 loss to Houston in the Class AAA girls soccer state championship game Saturday at Chattanooga's Girls Preparatory School.
Grigg suffered torn ligaments in her right ankle during the Lady Rebels' 2-1 win over Brentwood on Oct. 29 for the Region 6-AAA title -- but played in the sectional win against Hendersonville and in all three state tournament games.
It was Grigg, in fact, whose corner kick led to Franklin's go-ahead goal with 12 minutes remaining against Houston. The kick, from the left corner, was off Grigg's right foot.
"It hurts, but you've got to do what you've got to do," a subdued Grigg -- sporting a protective boot on her right foot -- said after Saturday's loss.
One of seven Lady Rebel seniors making their fourth consecutive state tournament appearance, Grigg was looking to kick Franklin to its first state crown since 2003.
"It's gotten to the point I don't think about the pain," she said. "We needed a good corner kick. I looked at the clock, thought about what needed to happen and thought I could put it in there."
She did, giving sophomore Chesney White a good feed for the goal before Houston rallied with a pair of goals to re-take the lead and held on for the win.
In the aftermath of the loss, though, Grigg could find one good thing.
"My left foot has gotten better," she said.

Oak Ridge Season ends with disappointing semifinal loss to Franklin
by Chris Bishop
Late last week, the Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats enter their state semifinal match looking for ervenge against the Franklin Lady Rebels and a trip to the Class AAA state championship match. While the game was vastly different than last year's 3-0 loss, the Lady Wildcats bid fell short as Franklin came out on top of a hard fought match with a 2-1 win.
Last year, Franklin jumped on the Lady Wildcats early, taking a 3-0 lead into the half and cruising to a rather easy victory. It was evident from the start that this year's match would be different. Oak Ridge possessed the ball well and put presure on the Lady Rebels from the start.
In the 20th minute, senior Jennifer Lee collected a ball in front of the Rebel goal and beat the keeper to the right for the 1-0 lead.
Oak Ridge continued to press the Lady Rebels and find opportunities. Franklin was dangerous on counter attacks and began to settle down and find some opportunities as the half progressed.
In the 28th minute, the Lady Wildcats were whistled for a foul in the box and were awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore keeper Margo Quinn made an attempt on the shot, but the ball slipped past and into the goal to tie the score.
The remainder of the half was much the same. Oak Ridge posessed the ball well and created chances on goal, while Franklin would select opportunities to counter attack.
Early in the second half, the Lady Rebels took advantage of a related Oak Ridge team as a midfielder split two Lady Wildcats and beat Quinn with a great shot into the side net to give Franklin a 2-1 lead.
Oak Ridge shoed no signs of rolling over. Much of the remaining 37 minutes were played in the Franklin half. The Lady Wildcats put enormous pressure on the Franklin back like and keeper, getting off numerous shots and earning five corner kicks. But the Lady Rebels maintained great defensive organization and the Franklin keeper made two grat saves to keep Oak Ridge out of the net.
After starting the season 5-4-1, the Lady Wildcats manage to reel off 14 straight victories and end the season with a 19-5-1 record.

Lady Rebs soccer team loses bid for 11 state title with 3-2 loss in finals
by Marcus Stone, Sportswriter
The Lady Rebels of Franklin came just short of winning soccer state championship No. 11 Saturday, losing to Houston 3-2 in a back-and-forth affair that saw multiple lead changes.
Trailing at the half 1-0, Mackenzie Moore evened the game just shy of the 65-minute mark with a header off a Morgan Zigelsky kick. Chesney White gave Franklin their only lead three minutes later.
“That picked our energy up,” said coach Jimmy Burchett. “It was an up-hill battle all the way until that point when we ended up with the lead.”
Franklin did not keep the advantage for long as Alex Driver tied the game 30 seconds later. Olivia Harrison knocked in the game-winning goal with less than six minutes left in the match, ending the Lady Rebels’ season.
“The excitement and jubilation on our sideline was tremendous, but before we could really sit down and enjoy the rest of the game they scored and tied it,” Burchett said. “We went from a constant level, to a high, to a low. It was a very emotional time and a roller-coaster ride in that ten-minute period.”
The team finishes the season with an impressive 18-4 record that few saw coming after the team lost three All-State players from last year, including All-American Lucy Brient.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the way they handled themselves with the pressure to get there,” Burchett said of his team. “There were a lot of people that didn’t give us a chance to get there. We were playing our best at the end and that’s the goal. To have the team playing their best at tournament time.”
The team beat Oak Ridge in the semifinals 2-1 Thursday to advance to the championship game. Zigelsky scored both goals for her team, including a game tying, penalty kick goal. Franklin beat Collierville in the quarterfinals 3-0.

Lady Rebels Try To Take Title
by Jacob Lindsey
For the first time in six years the Franklin's Girls Soccer team made it to the State Championship. Even though they suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 loss, these athletes and coaches are proud of the great season that the team put together.
Senior goalie Taylor Mangrum is "grateful to finally make it to the State Championship after being knocked out during the State tournament during the previous three years." Although disappointed in the loss, Senior Forward Anna Grigg called this the " best year yet." The girls played a hard-fought championship game against Houston. After being down 0-1 at halftime, the team decided to get their act together and play "Franklin soccer." This meant that they were going to enter the second half playing to feet, playing composed, and playing as a team. They knew that the only way to succeed was to do it as a team. The Lady Rebels played a great second half and actually took the lead with ten minutes to go. Unfortunately, Houston did not let down. They quickly put in to two goals in the final minutes of the game. The Lady Rebels did not give up and fought until the 80th minute. The Lady Rebels did not win a state title, but they did take home a runner up title, which is something to be very proud of. But the girl's season was much more than what was in the win-loss column. The recurring theme from the players was the friendships formed throughout the season. The friendships were a large reason for the success they attained. As in most sports, chemistry is a major factor, a factor that Franklin clearly had. The team has a saying: "The will to win cannot be beat." It is apparent that every girl on the team believed that, and that is one of the reasons that they were able to have such success.

Quote. "We entered the season with expectations of being where we were at the end. We had a dip in the middle and lost back-to-back games, but after that, the team rededicated themselves to the initial goal of the state finals. We played pretty consistently from that point. We had a different person that stepped up in big games and did things for us. It was a team effort to get to that final game."
