Lady Rebels nab soccer title, 2-0
The Franklin Lady Rebels soccer team clinched the regular-season district title with a 2-0 win over Centennial on Tuesday night at Cheek Park.
The win also assured Franklin the No. 1 seed in the District 11-AAA Tournament that will begin next week with the top four seeds hosting opening-round games.
The game remained a stalemate for much of the first half, with both teams doing a good job of posessing the ball but unable to make a solid run on the goal. The Lady Rebels grabbed the lead late in the first half when Kaley Forrest netted a rebound shot from a Sara Wohlhueter header that brought Centennial keeper Sallie Heard out of the net to make a play, leaving the goal unattended.
"We started out pretty slow tonight," Franklin coach Jimmy Burchett said. "We have reached a time in the year that we can't give teams a chance to gain momentum early in the game. We kind of came out flat tonight, but we have some veteran players that really know when to step it up and take over a game."
Franklin successfully took over the game in the second half when freshman sensation Monica Dunham beat Heard with a shot from a Jordan LeFan cross to put the Lady Rebels up 2-0 for good. Dunham would have to be helped off the field later after a collision with a Centennial player that reinjured an ailing sprained ankle.
"I was really surprised and excited to get the goal," Dunham said. "It was a rough game for me to that point. I had been knocked down a couple of times and needed something to help me stay up. I got knocked down again later in the game and twisted my ankle and had to come out of the game."
Centennial tried to claw back into the game, putting a good bit of pressure on Franklin's freshman keeper, Taryn Holland. Holland responded with some great saves that assured the win and the shutout for Franklin.
The Lady Rebels wrapped up regular-season play last night at home against Ravenwood, but results were not in at press time. Franklin will likely play Overton in the opening round of the district tournament and Centennial will most likely play Ravenwood.

On Monday, Natalie Dunham celebrated her return from an akle injury that sidelined her the entire regular season, scoring two goals, with Lindsay Bury and Jessicah Wilson also scoring twice.
Rayburn was voted the District Defensive Most Valuable Player and Jimmy Burchetet was voted District Coach of the Year. Forrest, Wohlhueter, Wilson, and Monican Dunham also were voted to the All-District Team.

The Lady Rebels (18-4) played Brentwood last night for the second time in a week, this time for the Region 6-AAA title. Lacy Wilerson had the hat trick Tuesday, including a penalty kick late in the first half, as they blanked District 12 runner-up McGavock 10-0 in the region semifinals. Kaley Forrest scored twice and Sara Wohlhueter, Brooke Spanjian, Elizabeth Barnes, Katy Rayburn, and Jessica Wilson also scored.
They won the District 11-AAA title last Friday, rallying with two goals late in the first half to beat Brentwood 2-1. With her team training 1-0, Monica Dunham lofted a perfect shot over the head of Lady Bruins goalkeeper Steph Stallo just under the crossbar from 15 yards out to tie the game. Later, Jorda LeFan lofted a perfect cross at the right corner of the penalty box that found the corner of the net, just inside the right post.
Last night's winner plays host to Region 5 champion Hendersonville in substate play Tuesday.

Frankin Earns AAA Soccer Title
One of the Class AAA girl's state soccer finalists entered Sunday's match at Finley Stadium with ten state championships and three runner-up finishes, while the other team was playing in its first title match.
Even though Franklin had all the experience and history on its side, it took the Lady Rebels until late in the second half to clinch their 11th state championship with a 2-0 victory over Tullahoma.
Their first goal came from senior defender Katy Rayburn midway through the first half, but Franklin head coach Jimmy Burchett said he didn't feel the win was secured until freshman forward Monica Dunham's goal in the final five minutes.
"That was it," Burchett said. "I felt like two goals would be enough."
Dunham, who was chosen the tournament's most valuable player, scored on Tullahoma's backup keeper Bre Davis after an assist from Sara Wohlhueter. Davis entered the game a little more than 10 minutes remaining when Lady Wildcats coach Richie Chadwick moved starter Ann Shelton to play up front.
Shelton, who had helped the Lady Wildcats reach the final with outstanding saves in their semifinal match, had scored 12 goals during the season, and Chadwick hoped she could give his team a spark. "I wish we had subbed her a little earlier, but at 1-0 we didn't want to jump the gun," Chadwick said. Shelton never got a clear chance, however, and the Lady Rebels trio of Senior backs -- Wohlhueter, Rayburn, and Lindsay Bury -- helped freshman keeper Taryn Holland post a second tournament shutout. "I think the zeroes speak for themselves," Burchett said of his senior defenders. "They have played together for four years, and they read each other very well."
Burchett's team has five seniors who have been to the state tournament for four consecutive seasons, and the coach said last year's 2-1 loss to Germantown in the state final has motivated them all season. "Last year's match was a major disappointment for them, and that's been the goal from day one, to come back here and win it this year," Burchett said. "It's nice when it works out like that."
The Lady Wildcats did have several scoring opportunities but didn't manage to finish any. Still, Chadwick said he was pleased with his team's performances. "Franklin is an excellent team," Chadwick said. "They've been here before. To lose to those guys 2-0 is nothing to be ashamed about." Franklin ends its season with a 22-4 record, while Tullahoma finishes the year 17-3-1.
