General Details For Friday walks
Start time for walks: 11am (unless otherwise stated) at the start venue. May change if the weather is predicted hot.
Walk dates: Could change due to unsuitable weather, work commitments etc. Revised dates will be notified.
Refreshments: Please bring a drink and an energy snack along for ALL walks.
Clothing: Please wear suitable walking shoes or boots and dress for the weather.
Equipment: Walking poles might be useful for the “hills” and where the ground is uneven or muddy.
Terrain: Please plan for muddy sections on any of this year’s walks after heavy rainfall.
Walk Speed and Leadership: Walks follow simple routes to allow for the range of walking speeds. The walk leader will give some simple advice at the start of the walk to ensure the group does not get separated.
Pre-registration for walks : The walk leader will send an email out about a week before the walk with the final details of the walk and requesting confirmation of walkers attendance.
Travel to walk start point: Please make your own arrangements for getting to the walk start point, however if anyone needs a lift, the walk leader can help organise this. Walkers are encouraged to lift-share where possible.
Friday 16th May 2025: Little Thetford
A 2.5 mile circular walk wildlife spotting along the Great Ouse at Little Thetford and enjoying views of Ely Cathedral. An option to extend the walk to 4.8 miles. Both parts of the walk are flat, however there are 2 stiles and the Railway line to cross on both routes. Meet at 11am by the yellow road-salt container on Holt Fen. (Main Rd in Little Thetford turns into Holt Fen a short distance before you get to the railway). What3words- overruns.louder.sprains. Postcode CB6 3HB. Friday 13th June 2025 : Bluntisham & Barleycroft Lake
An easy and flat 3 mile walk through Bluntisham and south to Berrycroft Lake and Brownshill Lock, returning the same route. An option to extend the walk to 5 miles crossing the Great Ouse and exploring Ouse Fen. Parking at the south end of Holliday’s road in Bluntisham. Meet at 11am by the bus stop at the junction of Holliday’s road and St Mary’s Close. what3words- barn.shifts.mute. Postcode PE28 3LW. For those wanting a relaxed outing and especially if you want to do the full walk please bring your lunch and drinks and we will lunch at Brownshill lock.
Friday 11th July 2025 : Dry Drayton
A 3 mile easy and flat circular walk around the pretty Dry Drayton area. An option to extend the walk to 5 miles walking to the nature reserve in Bar Hill and back the same route. Meet at 11am in front of the St Peters and Pauls Church. What3words- times.destiny.fastening.postcode CB23 8BZ. Friday 15th August 2025: Histon to Westwick (later date & earlier time than originally posted. Updated 13-8-25)
A 3.5 mile circular walk exploring Histon, the surrounding farmland and skirting Westwick. Some gentle inclines, but otherwise easy walking. Please bring a snack and drinks, and note there is no seating available on the route. Meet at 10am at the Parlour Close bus stop on Cottenham Rd. Parking is possible in front of the allotments on the opposite side of Cottenham Rd to the bus stop. What3words- being.odds.thickens, postcode CB24 9XP.
Friday 19th September : Wicken Fen
A choice of Route 1: 4 mile loop around the wide open Adventurers’ Fen, part of the Wicken Fen NR, wildlife spotting, or Route 2: about 2 miles looping around the main and more tame part of the reserve. Both routes are flat, Route 1 is rugged. Meet 11am in the Reserves’ main car park. what3words- assemble.drifting.roughest. Postcode CB7 5XP. NOTE: Non-members of the National Trust: car parking is £3.20, entry for Route 2 is £10. Please bring a drink and pack-up for Route 1. The Reserves does have a cafe for refrshment after the walk.
Friday 10th October : Cambridge by the River Cam
A 4.3 mile linear walk along the River Cam travelling by bus from Cottenham to Histon Road. Walking down Castle Street to the river and on to the Green Dragon pub in Chesterton, returning through Chesterton back to Histon Road. Lunch can be either in the pub or bring a picnic. Start time to be determined based on bus times nearer the walk date.
