9-minute Blind Tournament Summary
Weeknight games have moved to Mondays. At first I was fearful that things weren't going to work out on the new night as we only had 4 positive RSVPs (including Shannon and me!) as of Friday morning, but we got one more (Friday), then two more on Monday afternoon, and then Billy showed up with Tim and Will in tow. So the almost-canceled tournament ran with 9 players!
Before we kicked off the tournament, though, four of us played our typical 10¢/25¢ cash game (being big spenders we all bought in for $10 initially, though at one point I had to go back for an additional $5 in chips). We did put a bit of a twist on it this time, and it seemed well-received so unless I hear otherwise I think we'll make this a permanent change. Whenever someone won two hands in a row, we played the following hand as pot-limit 5-card Omaha (high only) with a mandatory straddle (and guaranateed last-to-act preflop position) by the person who just won the previous pots (we played 10¢/20¢/40¢ blinds). Those ended up our biggest pots of the cash game, and we all seemed to have fun figuring out the right way to play the game. At some point Jason D is going to come in on a Monday and clean us all out...
Thinking I only had 5 for the tournament, I added two minutes to each of our levels (bumping them from 7 minutes to 9 minutes: nearly a 30% lengthening ). It definitely made for a later night, but the game felt much less frenzied to me. I think it's a good trade off and wouldn't be opposed to making it a long-term change. If folks have feedback one way or the other, lay it on me. Based on how this went, I'm thinking all the way up to 11- or 12-minute levels would be doable for the Project Mayhem final table.
Shout out to Bucky for showing up for the first time in ages. Cards did not break in your favor, but it was great catching up and hopefully we see more of you in the future. Also a nod to Billy for (per usual) showing up with lots of players. I'm a fan of folks bringing friends and seeing fresh faces every week. The game wouldn't happen without our regular crowd (Jason, Julius, Billy) but catching up with the every-now-and-then folks keeps things interesting. If you've got someone in your life you think may be interested in playing and you think would get along well with the crowd, please step out of your comfort zone and extend an invitation next time around.
Also a thanks to Carrie, without whose help, it'd have taken even longer to get the tournament up and running. Always great to have effective, efficient friends there to watch your back and help get things going.
Billy also owned my soul, getting it in good against me all night long. There were a few near-suckouts on my part, but by the time we saw all five board cards, the best-hand when all the chips went in (i.e., Billy's hand) always held up. I suppose that's a weakness in my game: depending on my ability to conjure suckouts...
Congrats the Jason and the ladies for winning all the monies. We saw lots of good play in the game but I think the top-4 went to the right four people. Billy and Carrie can argue over who should've bubbled vs. min-binked 3rd place money (there may have been a game-altering 2-outer in there, QQ beating KK), but that's the nature of no-limit hold'em...
