Merry Holiday Party!
We ended up with 9 for the Quick Tournament and 8 for the evening's Main Event, and in the process closed out our Season IV. There was an incentive (I believe the email called in "priming the punctuality pump") for folks to show up at 5pm, and that went a long way towards getting us started early and finished relatively early. If we could ensure this each time, I'm guessing I could add about 20% longer levels to the structure. (How's that for providing incentive to getting folks to show up on time!)
We had three Christmas trees (ack! Holiday Planty Entities) in the house; lights all over the place (old-school and LEDs!); cookies up the wazoo; a mash of Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years, solstice, generic gift-giving, and cold-weather themed music, and Shannon and I even trotted out our festive print sweaters and vests. Dave brought home brew, Jason and George brought cookies, I think nearly everyone brought beer (it's going to be a good Christmas weekend for me!). We had a few folks show up to our place for the first time (though not for their first time playing poker with the gang), and we even managed to go 2x on the buy-in for the Main Event tournament (the already volatile Cheap Rebuy Tourney). I always look forward to the end-of-season poker night as it turns into a big party; this Saturday did not disappoint!
I, of course, have the world's worst memory so it'd take something really outstanding to get me to remember a hand. Unfortunately, something really outstanding happened in the Quick Tournament: I got felted on the very first hand! Shannon and I both slowplayed a flopped three-of-a-kind then managed to get all the chips in the middle on the turn. Unfortunately for me, her kicker played and I was digging more chips out of the case a scant two minutes into the tournament. Joy!
Even with 7 players (out of 9) receiving the 30% punctuality bonus to their starting stacks in the Quick Tournament, it still doesn't play like a deep stacked tournament. We have three levels during which a player can rebuy, and in terms of big blinds that starting stack is 17BB, 10BB, and 7BB. There isn't a lot of room for fancy play in the Quick Tournament, which is why its the Quick Tournament. We ended up with a total of five rebuys (four after mine) during that first half hour, which had the effect of more than adding half-again to the prize pool (from $45 from buy-ins to $70 with the rebuys). As far as Quick Tournaments go, that's a pretty nice boost to the kitty, and I remember thinking at the time that it bodes really well for the already-crazy Cheap Rebuy Tournament which follows. "Get folks diggin' in their wallets!" — that's what I always say.
After the rebuy period was over, bust-outs happened pretty quickly (we lost 8 players in just under an hour). One idea I am floating now that we're between Seasons is to put one last tweak in the Quick Tournament once things get down to heads-up. At that stage I'm tempted to take away the option for the SB (which is also the dealer each hand) to just call the size of the BB preflop. The player first to act would then have to either fold or come in for a raise. I see a couple of changes that this rule would force: we'd have a shorter heads-up period between the last two players (while everyone else is waiting around to get cranked up for the evening's Main Event), but we'd also be awarding the largest portion of the prize pool (the difference between 1st and 2nd is the biggest jump on the payout schedule) more often to the player that got dealt the better cards. The Quick Tournament is already pretty heavily based on luck, so I hesitate to push it even more in that direction, but the issue is that typically the longest amount of time between bust outs occurs between third place being established and the second-place player getting KOed. This also happens to be the period of the tournament when the most people are standing around watching, not playing, wishing they could be involved in the game. I keep going back and forth in my mind on this one, so if you're reading this and happen to have an opinion on the subject, drop me an email. I will decide one way or the other prior to our starting Season V come January.
Ozzie and Mike were the two players who hadn't yet made it to our new place (and it so happens that their wives know each other from work), so it's somewhat fitting that they waltzed in and took the top two spots in the first tournament of the evening. Mike really did a great job of keeping his opponents on their toes, not exactly sure how he was playing from hand to hand, and Ozzie plays a very solid game of cards (cashing in 50% of the events he's attended). I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but I managed to come in third place for the (and this is not hyperbole here) SEVENTH TIME in a row for weekend games. What are the odds of that (note: Dave, I'm not really asking what the odds are)?!? And before you ask, no I have not been focused on trying to come in third each tournament.

The Main Event for the evening was the Cheap Rebuy Tournament (which also features add-ons at the break).

Cheap Rebuys and Add on at first break
I tossed out my standard line of "So how much does everyone want to buy in?" and then I explained that for this tournament we also happen to have half-price rebuys and everyone who makes it to the first break also can add on an additional amount to their stack of chips for half-price. So pretty much compared to one of our standard $10 Main Event tournaments, this one already plays like folks average between $15 and $20 into the prize pool (near double the stakes). Despite my warning, folks gravitated towards playing for $20 buy-ins (meaning $10 rebuys and add-ons), and before it was all said and done, we nearly got the prize pool up to $300! If ever there was a time to do better than THIRD PLACE in a tournament, this was certainly it!
As is typical in the tournaments for which we allow rebuys, they don't tend to happen until just before the break. This tournament was no exception, and in fact the first hand that led to rebuys was a fairly memorable 4-way all-in involving George, Julius, Neal, and Ozzie. Somehow (and it never works this way), Ozzie not only had the other three of us covered in chips, but also his pocket rockets (AA) dodged everyone else's cards and held up. Can you say chip leader?!? Ozzie sure could. And oh yeah, here's another $30 to the prize pool in rebuy monies.
But that wasn't the craziest rebuy hand of the evening! About two hands later, on the very last hand for which rebuys would be allowed, we ended up with another 3-way all-in hand. All three players had pocket pairs, and would you believe that the 99 won the largest portion of the pot, the TT tripled up his hand, and the KK went busto? Mike's TT was all in preflop on a T-high board, Ozzie and Neal got it all in on the turn (where Ozzie made his set of nines!), and my KK never did improve. OUCH. So now I rebought again, (in for $40 at that point), and wouldn't you know it but it was also time for add-ons (which all 8 of us took) so now I'm in the hole for $50!
With a total prize pool of $280, third place (which was NOT going to be my ultimate finishing position) was worth $47 (meaning I'd have been a net loser on the Main Event and possibly making me a +$1 profit on the evening if you include the Quick Tournament), second $78, and first place a cool $155. Now that's some nice cabbage going into Christmas week, eh?
After we got back from break, I leaned over to Julius (who had rebought two hands earlier and then added on at the break) and observed (from my fancy Tournament Director screen) that the average stack was T375 in chips and that he and I both basically had T300 (though I had spent an extra $10 getting there) from our last two hands. The implication was there was no reason to be too concerned. What I didn't point out (because I didn't realize it was going to be one of THOSE nights) was that the real reason to not be concerned was that the way to play was to get all your chips in with the worst hand.
I went on an absolute tear in knocking other players out. I took K7 (no pair no draw) to the river and binked a King (sorry Julius). I took J8o against AKs (sorry George — worse that it happened on the bubble). I took random garbage against nice looking preflop hands. And each time I got there. I ended up knocking out the eighth, the seventh, the sixth, the fifth, and the fourth place players. And then we were in the money and I was sitting there with the possibility of third place haunting my every step. Well, Ozzie was the other big stack and Jason had been hovering around playing the smaller stack very skillfully, but wouldn't you know it the two big stacks got it in and my hand (I think I had QQ vs. his AT) held up. Ozzie missed out on his chance for the win-win evening, and I had managed to dodge third place.
Of course, that was the end of my run-good. Sure, I saw KK and QQ a total of four times in the next twenty-five hands, but Jason skillfully managed to avoid playing against any of those, and after I double him up a few times, the chip lead did manage to go back and forth a few times before he finally plunged the dagger into my heart. But what did I care? At least it wasn't THIRD PLACE!
Really a fun time for the host (I said I wasn't drinking, but Dave's home brews took me over to the dark side...). I wish we didn't have to have a holiday break before the next game. I can't wait to get things cranked back up for next Season. I'm probably going to tweak the Bounty Tournament one more time (making it simpler to pay out — allowing me to drink a bit more that evening!), am possibly tweaking the heads-up betting of the Quick Tournament (depending on the feedback I get from folks), but the biggest change going into Season V is going to be our Project Mayhem poker league. If >$300 prize pools and deeper-stacked tournaments sounds like fun to you, then definitely check out that link and see if PM is up your alley. The idea is to collect a bit more from folks (only those who opt-into PM; non-league players don't pay an extra penny) on Saturday nights (an extra $6) to put forth towards a growing prize pool. At the end of the season (June or July) we'll have a big blow-out tournament for all the dough. Much more in the way of details on that page, but hopefully it sounds like a good deal to a bunch of our regular players!

Cheap Rebuys and Add on at first break
Oh, and I almost forgot! We just concluded Season IV, and in an inevitable conclusion, Shannon was our big winner. I closed the gap down the stretch (beware the power of SEVEN THIRD PLACE FINISHES!), but she held me off based on the third tie-breaker (total playing time). Now frankly, that's a silly way to break the tie (as she crushed the games this season), so I posted everyone's finishing position for each tournament which shows that she took first place FIVE times (compared to my measly once) which really indicates that this should be one of the tie breakers. I'll adjust that at some point in the future so we have a true fair system for determining first place.
