Standard Tournament Summary
Standard Tournament 9/14/11
No Limit Hold Em
Felt good to get back to poker! Julius and Jason were the first to arrive (Shannon had some trouble remembering Jason, but he took it in stride), then Billy and his friend Tim arrived with burritos. While waiting for Solveig, we negotiated a buy-in of $20 for a Standard Tournament, and when she arrived we got down to playing. As always, Shannon purchased and put out way too much food, though I was pleasantly surprised at how well we did in devouring everything. Thanks to folks who brought additional snacks as well!
The Standard Tournament went two hours before seeing its first bust out. As it was, there was a bit of controversy (at the time, everything was resolved at the table, however) as there were two all-in players and we managed three different ways to figure out the main and side pots. As I recall things — don't hold me to the specifics if I have a detail slightly off — the blinds were T100/T200 with a T25 ante. Julius was all-in for T380, Jason for T540, and Billy had both players covered. None of the players were in the blinds (Jason dealt, Neal was in the SB, and Shannon in the BB). Shannon took the first stab at getting the pots correct with the simplest method: put all of Julius's stack in the main pot and bring 380 in from each of the other two stacks. That'd probably have worked fine if I hadn't stuck my nose where it didn't belong and tried my own method. At one point Shannon got frustrated (I'm so sorry, honey...) and gave me my shot. I tried to recreate things from the start: "Three times 400 is 1200, minus three times 20 leaves 1140 in the main pot, everything else on the side." Folks with an attention to detail can see where my mistake lays. Julius went about things in what was probably the best possible way, recreating things from the end: 540 minus 380 is 160, multiplied by two leaves 320 in the side pot and everything else in the main. When I pointed out my system (with an extra T175 in the side pot) and asked Julius if he was satisfied, someone pointed out that I forgot to include the antes in the main pot. Moving those T175 over to the pots made my method and Julius's agree and everyone was content. As it turned out Billy went in with 88, and was up against 77 and AJ. The snowmen held up and the great side-pot debate was all for naught. Excepting that I took it as an opportunity to reflect upon and remember in future situations: 1. sit on my hands if someone else takes over first, and 2. it's probably best to properly recreate a pot from the end rather than the beginning. (I'd be okay with Shannon's no-math method, but the issue is that if you screw something up that way, there's no chance at fixing the problem. But if things are super straight-forward, then that'd be my first choice in methods.) Sorry gang, and hopefully I didn't put anyone off during Pot-gate.
In the end Billy (holding T7500) and Tim (holding T9000) chopped the winnings between first and second place.

After the Standard Tournament, six of us stuck around for a Quick Tournament at $10 stakes. That tournament is designed to run 60-75 minutes, and that held true to form. Billy again crushed the field and ended up the big winner on the night.
