A way to link existing desert roads in Inyo County to trails, trailheads, and campgrounds - that project now unfolds in all Inyo
towns and in Sacramento. Dick Noles and Randy Gillespie of Bishop spear-headed the linkage of trail systems for off-highway motor vehicles. They took the idea to every Inyo town several times and now community committees have gone to work to lay out limited routes for ATVs. The trails already exist but the pending legislation would allow ATV drivers to enter Inyo towns in limited places to access stores and gas stations. Assembly Bill 628, which would create a pilot project in Inyo for this off-road vehicle trail linkage, goes to a vote May 4th.
The CHP, Inyo Sheriff and Caltrans are working together on this project. The Sierra Club has objected to the project. They say the project would eliminate quiet places for the public to enjoy. Noles points to the large number of wilderness acres in Inyo and the need to organize and formalize ATV travel in the county. Noles and Gillespie will speak to the Bishop City Council Monday, April 11th.

Can see it now.....Groups of unsupervised kids and teen-agers on ATV's and motorcycles flying their way through quiet city streets and towns on their way to the local fast food restaurants...And then back to their parties in the mountains and hills,disrupting everything,and everyone in their way....even more so than they already do.Now it will be legal to do..maybe....That's great...

Will just note, Wayne, that the new arrangement requires a drivers license and only applies to ATVs. No dirt bikes.

Bennet, I would think that it would apply to all green sticker vehicles: ATV's, UTV's, motorcycles, and buggies because most of the potential users will be driving some sort of side-by-side.
And Wayne, the clientele you describe aren't being the ones targeted, but, if some licensed teens take advantage more power to them. There's a lot more out there in the front country to do beside party: photography, exploring, hunting/fishing, motor assisted or not.

That would be OK if that is the way it would turn out to be...with ATV's only....and only licensed drivers allowed to drive them...but only if it was correctly enforced.But I can guarantee you,at least where I live,the first day these trails open,there would be dirt bikes,unlicensed drivers on them,excessive speed,and problems that go along with all of the above....guarantee it.

That's great news; people allowed to be unsupervised, avoiding the law hairy arm of the law on ATVs, traveling unrestricted throughout the county on "back woods" trails and enjoying the freedoms that our founding fathers envisioned for its people, and creating a huge economic benefit for the county. This is absolutely great news!
